Laughter echoed through the hallway and a vase bobbled on a table for a few seconds. One small girl watched it with wide eyes, too struck with fear of getting in trouble for breaking it to move. The other, older little girl however, walked over and stood up on her tip-toes. She reached out with her hands and steadied the detailed vase. The little one sighed with relief and then took down the hall again, giggling. The older blonde smiled and took off after her, giggling as well. “Girls! Don’t run in the house! Go outside and do that!” their mother called from the living room, afraid that they were going to break something like they almost had seconds before. Almost immediately, the littlest child came to a halt, making her elder sister crash into her. They both fell down, giggling, and rolled into a wall. There was a wail, indicating that one of them had hurt themselves. From the living room, the creak of a chair could be heard alongside their mother’s annoyed sigh.
“I knew one of you were going to get hurt,” she muttered quietly, picking up her younger daughter—the one who was crying. “Carmen, you can’t rough house with your little sister like that. She’s younger than you and not as strong.” The oldest daughter—Carmen—didn’t flinch under her mother’s harsh gaze and just muttered a half-heart apology before she got up and headed into the living room at the sound of the front door unlocking. The littlest child stopped crying as their father entered the house, looking a bit hurried. “Daddy!” the girls cried. However, their father brushed Carmen aside as she attempted to hug him. She looked up at him indignantly and wound up to kick her father in the shin, but he was hurried and she missed. For a few minutes, the mother and father argued about going to hide somewhere. Then, there was a pounding on the door that made everyone jump. Except Carmen. She turned toward the door, mistaking it for a knock, and went to open the door.
Her father lunged for his daughter. “Carmen, leave it!” he hissed, but it was too late. Carmen turned the handle and started to open the door, and then it slammed open, knocking her to the side and to the floor. She gave a sharp cry of pain, and then laid on the floor dazed and confused. There was several minutes of arguing and Carmen pushed herself up to her knees, rubbing her head and feeling the slick warmth of sticky blood where the door had hit her head. Carmen wasn’t really sure what they were arguing about, but the strange man. . . no. . . no wasn’t that Daddy’s friend, Uncle Griffin? What was he doing? Carmen slowly got to her feet, and then stopped at the sound of gunfire that followed the sound of her mother screaming. She had forgotten that her youngest daughter was in her arms and had jumped in front of her husband to protect him from the gun-wielding Uncle Griffin. . . . Carmen’s father yelled, and her mother and sister fell to the ground. . . .
******
The train car shook and Carmen was thrown awake as she was nearly tossed into the window. However, as her body jolted she had roused from her dozing and reacted quick enough to grip the handhold for firmly. A few people glanced in her direction, but this late at night there weren’t a whole lot of people there, and it was expected that someone would doze off a little bit. Carmen hadn’t gotten a lot of sleep that morning, but that was something that happened every now and again. What normally didn’t happen was the dreaming about the night her mother and sister had been shot. The dream hadn’t frightened her—nothing much did—but it was just strange. She thought she had gotten over their deaths and the abandonment of her father a long time ago. Sighing, Carmen ran her fingers through her thick blond hair and sat down on a bench, bringing the katana strapped to her back around to her lap and ignoring the wary glances she got.
As the train came to a slow stop, Carmen realized that it where she needed to get off. Slowly, she got to her feet and started for the door, then stopped. “God fucking dammit,” she muttered before backing up and sinking into her seat, a scowl on her face. Down the tunnel she could see sunlight shining, and that meant horrible things for the young vampire. It meant she was going to be stuck in the subway system all day long. Had she really been asleep that long? Turning to a woman who was still on the train, she spoke. “Excuse me, what time is it?” she asked, a sour note in her voice. The woman gave her a disgruntled glare, then pulled out a cell phone and lit up the screen. “Six thirty,” the woman said after a second or two. “Fuck,” Carmen muttered, rolling her eyes. “Agito is going to murder me.” Why didn’t they have cell phones? The guy probably didn’t even know how to use one. Now he was probably going to sit up all day and wonder where the hell she was.
Just when Carmen thought things couldn’t get any worse, the announcement for the last stop was given several minutes later. She would have to get off and board another train, which meant trekking out into the tunnel where she could possibly get burned. Or perhaps she could just stay on—which she tried—but alas, someone poked their head in and told her to get off. She resisted, but initially they threatened to call security. That was something she didn’t want to deal with and slowly, Carmen moved her sword to her back and got off the train. Someone asked if she had a permit for the weapon, and she just flipped them off and stood in a dark shadow while she waited for the next train, sitting as far away from the sunlight as she could. However, she was already starting to get a bad headache. After what seemed to be a half an hour, the train came in and Carmen got to her feet.
The sun was higher and was bathing the platform from the entrance. Carmen sighed and walked calmly across the platform, head turned away from the light. She made it to the train, but the side of her face not in shadow was horribly red and even smoking a little. Carmen put a hand to her face and satin the far back of the car, pulling her hood up over her head and turning away from the others in the crowd. There were few enough people in the train right then for her to have a bench to herself. The last thing she needed was to have people staring at her burned features, only to notice that it would be gone in an hour. That was the last time she was getting off that subway car. Whenever they got to the last stop, she was going to sit there no matter what people threatened.

Calli had just gotten off another night ride and yawned. It's typical that every-time Calliope fell asleep that she dreamed; and when she dreamed she had prophetic visions. Which in turn left her exhausted because most of these dreams were scary and kept her awake for most of the night. So she had been trying this experiment. She had ridden the subway once and she managed to sleep but not for the usual five seconds or ten minutes thing. But for a whole hour and a half. And the best part was she didn't dream.
So for the past week she had been riding the subway as her only means of getting any peace from her dreams. This particular morning she felt rather chipper as she stepped off of her train. She yawned once more and stretched. She had been sleeping for a long time. She did a front and back cartwheel to stretch her back and then stood up straight. She then got on the train again as the next stop would be her last.
But then she stopped dead when she saw the girl. She was beautiful and Calli sighed heavily. "Not again" she thought sadly as she thought of how she knew the girl. The day before she had acquired a vision about this very morning and in seeing the very same girl. She sniffed the air and smelled something burning. She looked over to the girl and saw that her cheek was extremely red. "Vampire" she thought as she had gotten extremely good at telling them just by sight.
She glanced behind her and saw the sun rising. "But its morning; she'll be burned to a crisp in a matter of minutes." she thought as she contemplated. she came up with an idea but ran her hand through her hair. "Ra was right; I am a bleeding heart" she spoke to herself as she walked over to the lady. "Come with me" she sang as she grabbed the girl's hand. She then swiftly led her off of the train and into the bathroom.
"Hurry, switch clothes with me" Calliope instructed as she began taking off her outfit. Calli had been wearing a long-sleeved shirt and jeans and they showed no skin whatsoever. It was a bit chilly outside so she had brought a hoodie as well and took it out of her bag. She offered this to the girl as she smiled. "Don't worry; I'll get you out of this" she sang

Carmen fiddled with the hood of her sweatshirt. It had pretty much failed her. The pain didn’t bother her that much—it was painful and uncomfortable, but she could handle it. She pulled the hood further over her head and sank in her chair more. Once the train started to move and go through the tunnels, she’d be fine. But, suddenly, there were quick footsteps clinking on the train’s floor. Carmen lifted her head to see what the rush was and surprised when a dark-haired woman ran straight up to her. Carmen very nearly pulled her sword from her sheathe and lopped the girl’s arms off, but she was better than that. The girl didn’t look like she was in a position to attack. It was strange, but Carmen wasn’t paranoid that everyone was out to get her. She gave a non-commital grunt when the woman grabbed her hand and pulled her along with the simple command of “Come with me.” The young vampire was taken quite by surprise.
Then, she was pulled through the platform. “Hey! Watch where you’re pulling me!” she snarled, lifting a hand to her face and hissing through her teeth as the girl pulled her across the exit and she was bathed in sunlight for a few seconds. They made it through—steam slowly rising off the irritated vampire—and then she was pulled into a bathroom. “These things have bathrooms? Should just stay here for the day. . . ,” Carmen muttered to herself, running a hand through her hair and pulling her hood back at the same time. But now there was the issue of what this woman wanted with her. Eyes narrowed and scowl on her face, she turned to the human and opened her mouth to say something, but the woman continued to surprise her. . . and started to take of her clothes, demanding that Carmen do the same in order to change. Carmen couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the notion.
“Stop, stop, stop. Just cut it out,” Carmen demanded, reaching forward and grabbing the girl’s arms roughly—rough enough to leave deep bruises: Carmen still wasn’t quite sure how much stronger she was than humans. She didn’t mean any harm, it just sort of happened sometimes—and stopping her from stripping before she had even removed her jacket. “Your clothes are no better than mine and you’re smaller than me. They wouldn’t fit me. Now do tell me what the hell you think you’re doing and why I shouldn’t just tear your arm off for dragging me through the sunlight like that,” Carmen demanded, falling straight into her bitter and abrasive attitude. She disliked people in general, and it was only Agito who normally got to see the kinder side of her. “Why do you even want to help me? Usually people who know what I am want to be as far away from me as possible or want me dead.”

"Because I want to help you." she said as she cringed a bit from the grasp the vampire was putting on her arms. "I want to make sure you get out of this subway in one piece because if you should go down I would think you'd want to go out fighting. Not burnt to a crisp on a subway platform?" Calliope questioned as she stopped. She then took out a huge blanket that would envelope both of them and protect them from the sun if wrapped properly.
"And if I wanted you dead I would have killed you by now" she explained in a somewhat cynical voice that was unlike Calliope. She usually had a calm and sweet demeanor to her. She had noticed that she was becoming a bit more cynical and menacing to the world after the hell her brother Ra put her through by shooting her full of bullets and making her kill a harmless were-hyena who wanted nothing more then to protect her friend and run away.
Somehow and swiftly Calli had reached into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out one of her two desert eagles and placed it against the vampire's forehead. "I am a hunter but I am not here to hunt you. But if you don't want my help I could just let you burn or I could dust you right here?" she suggested as she cocked the gun with an unemotional look on her face

“Because I want to help you,” the girl replied. Carmen didn’t miss her wince and she slowly pulled her hands away, realizing that she probably didn’t need to hold the girl that hard. “Because that’s a good explanation,” Carmen muttered under breath, nearly missing the part where the woman mentioned how she seemed like the type of person who would want to go down fighting. There wasn’t a whole lot you could do to fight the sunlight, was there? The next thing she said didn’t really faze Carmen that much, just made her angrier. “Oh would you have? I would have liked to see that, human. You, kill me,” Carmen snapped with a roll of her eyes. She didn’t seem at all scared, and in truth, she never really was scared of anything.
The next thing the girl did was reach into her clothes and pull out some gun. Carmen narrowed her eyes as it was pressed against her head, but she didn’t flinch or waver in her demeanor. “I am a hunter but I am not here to hunt you. But if you don't want my help I could just let you burn or I could dust you right here?” the girl suggested. Ah huh. She thought she was all that, didn’t she? Could she not feel the cold steel pressed against that pretty little neck of hers? Carmen had barely moved, but like with the cops, the last thing you wanted to do was to reach into your pocket after threatening someone. IT hadn’t taken much for Carmen and her vampiric speed to get her katana out and place it against the girl’s neck at the same time the girl had pulled out her gun. “Like I said, I’d like to see that, human. Who can act faster? You—who seems to be the type to hesitate and are a slow human, or me—a fast vampire who would not even bat at eye at your head rolling across this floor?”

Calli smiled and smirked. She then put away her gun. "It doesn't matter. You and I can play Russian Roulette later. Right now we need to get you out of here and into the sun without you burning up" she said as she handed her a blanket.
"The name's Calliope" she said as she gave her a sideways smile

The human at least seemed to be semi-intelligent. The girl put her gun safely away and Carmen waited a few seconds before she pulled her sword away from the girl’s neck and exaggerated the movement for slipping the katana into its ruby-red scabbard. She continued to scowl at the human, even if the girl had slipped into some other personality. “It doesn't matter. You and I can play Russian Roulette later. Right now we need to get you out of here and into the sun without you burning up,” she said while handing Carmen the blanket. The young vampire slowly took the blanket from her and just held it, the ends barely touching the floor. A blanket. It was incredibly inconvenient and would be awkward while she was walking. Wouldn’t it just be better if she were to stay here for the day? She didn’t give two shits what anyone thought about her, so she wouldn’t mind just sitting in the bathroom. . . .
“The name's Calliope,” the human introduced herself after a few seconds of silence. Carmen looked up at her, then nodded her acknowledgement but didn’t offer her own name. “So I’m curious as to where you think you’re going to take me that’s any better than this bathroom. I just need to stay out of the sun, and as you can see, there is no sunlight in here,” Carmen muttered, leaning against the wall and throwing the blanket over her shoulder. “I’m not leading you to the place that I live so you and your little hunter friends can storm the place when I’m asleep and murder me. Though I have to warn you, I’m a light sleeper.”

"I was planning on taking you to an abandoned building that has a basement that no sunlight penetrates. I thought that would be a good place for you to hide until the sun manages to set." she explained as she rubbed her arms as the pain seemed to fluctuate between throbbing and minor.
"And I don't have any hunter friends. It's just me, my father and brother. But they are away on business so its just you and me for the next few hours. And this bathroom can't protect you from the sun forever. At around 9 the sun starts peeking through the door and by twelve the room in complete;y lit by the sun's rays. Since its about 6 now you'd only have three hours before the sun would become a problem for you" she explained as she opened the door as the sun began to creep into the tiny room.
"See?" she offered as she quickly shut the door. Now bundle up in that and make sure that you aren't showing any skin. If people see you like this I can just explain that you have swine flu or something like that"

“I was planning on taking you to an abandoned building that has a basement that no sunlight penetrates. I thought that would be a good place for you to hide until the sun manages to set,”
[/i] the girl—oh wait, her name was Cantaloupe or something like that. No, Calliope. Close enough—explained. Carmen raised her eyebrows. An intelligent thought from the woman. How very strange. But it was much better than having Calliope let her stay at her house, or leading her to the loft that Agito and she stayed at. Agito would have a cow, and Carmen didn’t really feel like dealing with that. She wasn’t an idiot, anyway. “And I don't have any hunter friends. It's just me, my father and brother. But they are away on business so it’s just you and me for the next few hours. And this bathroom can't protect you from the sun forever. At around 9 the sun starts peeking through the door and by twelve the room in completely lit by the sun's rays. Since its about 6 now you'd only have three hours before the sun would become a problem for you.”Carmen looked at the door. There was a rather large crack between the door and the floor. But they were underground and the exit to the place was several yards away. The most that would happen would be that a large section of the bathroom would be bathed in light and the sun would arch across the room, but the entire bathroom wouldn’t be filled with sunlight. It was physically impossible while they were down in the tunnels. Raising her eyebrows again, she pegged the woman for something of an idiot. But, it was best not to argue with her, and a basement did sound nicer than sitting in a public restroom for twelve hours. Perhaps she would even be able to get some sleep while she was down there. Ha. Not with a known hunter knowing that she was down there. Rolling her eyes, Carmen decided to let the girl help her out for a little while. “Swine flu. . . . I’ve never heard of anything more ridiculous,” Carmen muttered to herself before pulling the blanket up around her and clutching at the inside to keep her hands out of the sun. She refused to cover her head fully. She wasn’t afraid of being back-stabbed, but she didn’t trust the girl. “Well, get on with it then. We better not have to walk very far. This blanket is going to get hot and I can only imagine that I will follow suit,” Carmen muttered, glaring at Calliope through the shadow. Carmen was usually loathe to let anyone help her for any reason, but she figured it was just easier to placate the hunter for now. If she tried to pull anything funny while Carmen was vulnerable, then Carmen would lop off head before she let the woman kill her. Naturally she would probably die from spontaneous combustion, but at least she wouldn’t be killed by some mediocre hunter who had lulled her into a false sense of security. Carmen didn’t fear death, but she was incredibly stubborn and when she died, it would be on her terms and no one else’s. As far as she was concerned, Calliope was following her, not the other way around. Calli rolled her eyes as she opened the door and held it open for Carmen. "I wonder if she walks as well as she complains" she thought to herself as she left the bathroom. She then lead the girl in the blanket up the steps and past tons of people. They stared at the girl in confusion but sad nothing. After they made it to the top where the sun was out Calli took a right turn.
"Come on, its not that for from here. Just a block or two" she sang as she walked down the streets that was crowded with people. Just so that no one would suspect the girl in the blanket she spoke in a Mexican dialect that was perfect. That way it would seem that her and the girl were immigrants from Mexico and that the girl in the blanket had a cold or something.
Shortly after walking maybe five minutes they made it to the abandoned building. Calli kicked open the door and then rushed inside. She picked the lock and led Carmen down the stairs and into the basement. It looked quite nice. Kinda like the basement from That 70's Show but a bit bigger. Calliope sat on the couch and rubbed her arm.
"There ya go, safe from the sunlight for the rest of the day" she said as she went into the bathroom. She rubbed some icy hot stuff on her arms from the bruising that Carmen had given her. Then she wrapped up her arms in an ace bandage and sighed. "Well that was fun" she explained she flipped her hair and then laughed lightly.

Some people might have felt like an idiot walking around wrapped up in a blanket, but Carmen ignored the people who looked at her or whispered about her, wondering what wrong with her and why she was walking around looking like she was an Eskimo wanna-be. Carmen didn’t care what other people thought of her, and this was necessary to walk around outside. However, even under the blanket she could feel the rays of the sun and she didn’t like it. It made her feel all hot. But at least she could see. She could deal with the headache just so long as she wasn’t walking around blind. It was incredibly inconvenient for her not to be able to see. It was her stubborn attitude again. But at least it wasn’t going to take very long for them to reach the abandoned house that Calliope had been talking about. It didn’t take long at all, and Carmen muttered something under her breath as the human kicked in the door and led her to the basement.
The first thing Carmen did was throw the blanket off her and find a nice, dark corner to sit in, holding her hands against her throbbing head. Her eyes itched horribly as if someone had scratched them, and she used all of her will power not to claw them out. She ignored the young human hunter for several minutes while she waited for the pain to pass, considering several times to drain her and use her blood to help her heal faster, but Carmen wasn’t one for killing someone who had gone through all the trouble to help her, even if the girl had held a gun to her for a few seconds. Carmen had no doubt that this hunter would be cut down before she could pull the trigger. “You don’t have to stay here. In fact, I would prefer if you didn’t. I’m not your friend and nor do I want to be. I’m almost grateful to you, though. Almost.”

Calliope laughed at her compliment. "I guess that's as close to a thank you that I'm going to get" she joked as she stood up. "Well you don't have to tell me twice. I'll leave you to your thoughts" she said as she stood up. She stretched a bit and then sighed heavily. She was sore as hell and needed to walk around for a bit
"But if you are hungry I can oblige?" she offered as she slid up her sleeve showing her wrist.

“I guess that's as close to a thank you that I'm going to get,” the girl commented, standing up off the couch. Carmen just gave a blank stare, her eyebrow cocked slightly. This girl was too damn happy for her. Her laugh was starting to grate on Carmen’s nerves. “Well you don't have to tell me twice. I'll leave you to your thoughts.” Carmen watched her stretch for a few seconds, that same scowl on her face. “Well, it’s good to see the world isn’t full of idiots after all,” she muttered bitterly. She didn’t keep it a secret that she looked down on everyone and didn’t like making friends. It was only by a sheer miracle that Agito had been able to warm her up a little bit, but Carmen wasn’t sure if anyone else could. Expecting the woman to leave, Carmen closed her eyes and willed her headache to stop before it made her pass out.
However, Calli hadn’t left yet. Carmen opened one eye to look at her as she offered her a drink. Carmen opened her other eye and looked the girl over, appraising her for a second. She stood up, knowing that her sun-induced headache and the burning in her eyes would go away if she fed a little bit off the woman. But she couldn’t control herself when she started to feed. It wouldn’t exactly bother Carmen if she killed another hunter, though. “What’s your angle?”

For some reason I feel like we are friends even though that's clearly not the case" she explained softly as she looked away from Carmen.
"And I know how to stop you if you lose control. It's not my first time with a vampire. But that's another story" she explained as she trailed off as she looked even sadder then she normally was. Almost as if she had died in side when she spoke of that other time

She didn’t have an angle? She just wanted to help? Carmen raised her eyebrows and crossed her arms over her chest, looking un amused and matching the girl’s expression with a glower. Carmen didn’t want to be a cold-blooded killer if she didn’t have to be. She wasn’t the type of person who killed just because she could. Carmen knew what she was capable of and didn’t let it go to her head. She didn’t fear taking a life, she preferred not to. Everyone died at some point. What did it matter if it was at her hand or not? After watching her mother and younger sister die at the hand of a mad-man—a man the family had trusted with their lives—Carmen had never wanted to end up like him. She was a woman full of contradictions, and most of the time they only made sense to her twisted mind.
Calli’s mood seemed to change, and though Carmen noticed the switch, she didn’t really care. If the girl was looking for sympathy, she was not going to get it from the young vampire. “Fine. If you insist. But keep your sad little sob stories to yourself. I have my own issues to deal with and yours I don’t give a rat’s ass about,” Carmen replied snappishly, striding across the floor toward Calli without hesitation. She didn’t ask twice and once she started she wasn’t going to stop until she finished, her wounds were taken care, or Calli hit her to snap her out of her of her feeding trance. Carmen took the girl’s wrist and sank her teeth into it, unaware or not caring about the fact that it probably didn’t feel too well. But the thing about Carmen was that when she bit someone and fed off of them, her prey—should they survive—would be happy. They would lose any sense of despair or sadness when she fed from them. For nearly a week Calliope would be the happiest and most optimistic person in the world.
The blood pooled in Carmen’s mouth and she relaxed considerably, enjoying the taste. Now that she had been a vampire for nearly a year, she had grown accustomed to the bitter, coppery taste of a person’s life nectar. As she fed, Calliope could would most likely feel as if her sadness—whatever had been making her sad earlier—would just melt away. She would go back to annoying Carmen with her laughs, but at least for a little while Calliope would be in some sort of high. . . but only for a little while. Once the effects of Carmen’s fangs wore off, Calliope would crash. Hard. Depression would most likely follow and for a few days, while she was getting over the crash, she would probably be the most miserable person. . . a complete opposite to how she would feel directly after Carmen finished. But, Carmen didn’t think about any of this while she was feeding. Her headache started to leave, and the burning in her eyes started to soothe themselves.
