→ HAIR Honey brown hair that tends to grow lighter in the summer. It's curly and tends to fall to mid-back - she always lets it hang loose.
→ EYES Brown, but with flecks of green and amber if someone bothered to look closely at them in the right light. It takes a lot of trouble to notice, though.
→ STATS Five feet, ninety six pounds.
→ BODY Kaia is slim, and at the moment rather lanky, with too-long legs that she still needs to grow into, She hopes she'll eventually have a dancer's frame, though she doesn't exactly know what that entails - just that it sounds nice and graceful. She's relatively pale, and tends to burn rather than tan.
→ FEATURES She hasn't had the time or the effort to get into anything major that would leave scars, but she has a pale blotch of skin on her hand from where she burned it badly once.
→ WARDROBE Kaia dresses primarily to meet expectations, and adjusts so she's comfortable. Given she's still young and not expected to do anything vitally important, she generally can wear jeans and a t shirt or sweater, though she favours clothes with subdued colours and subtle patterns. → FULL PERSONALITY Kaia, at first glance, is a precocious brat, too smart for her own good and without the accompanying sense to keep her from taking interest in everything and knowing when to shut up. This is all true. She has a short temper on many issues, and cannot stand being told what she should think or believe, or how she should act. Doing so only sparks a rebellion and either stealthy attempts to undermine the other's authority or a full on shouting match, depending on how far she's pushed. Getting her to back down can be exhausting, and she often insists on being as independent as possible considering her age. She can be stubborn and determined, and she concentrates very well, meaning she usually does well in school. However, she's a perfectionist, and holds herself to incredibly high standards - if she fails to meet them, she tends to drive herself without much care for how tired she is, and if she continues to fail, it's easy for her to become depressed.
She doesn't make friends very easily unless they put themselves forward and make the beginning overtures, and she tends to be tactless in conversation, making blunt statements without regards to the consequences. She's unsure of herself in social situations, and absolutely hates to be made much of. Usually her way of escaping the limelight is to make up some thin excuse, and if that doesn't work, make more transparent comments until she's allowed to leave or humiliates the whole group. Despite knowing many useful - and useless things - the niceties of society and tradition often escape or confuse her, and one of her favourite questions is "why". "Why are things like that?" followed invariably by "Well, that's stupid. They should change it." which doesn't make her many friends.
She tends to be lonely - she wants real praise, not empty words from people who don't pay attention to or appreciate her efforts, and without it, she wilts, unsure of her own worth.

→ FULL HISTORY Kaia was born into a happy family, though not a very successful one. Her parents didn't earn much money to support her and her older brother, and she went without many of the things that her classmates bragged about. Her mother wanted a more intensive job, but her father wanted her to focus more on the children - it was a common argument that was a refrain in the house for a few years. She wasn't old enough to understand it then, but she did understand the proud feeling when she came home from school and saw her family united in happiness for her good marks. Both her parents told her, always seriously, that she had a brilliant mind and needed to always focus on doing well in school.
So she did. Perhaps too much so - she cried whenever her mark dropped, but after the first scolding for making a big deal about it, she did so in her room, and as quietly as possible. Besides, her parents had more to worry about than that - the arguments were becoming more heated, and Kaia tried to be unobtrusive, only ever being helpful, and bringing home good news. That didn't stop the divorce from happening, though. Her father had custody of her brother, and she went with her mother. They moved to New York City, where her mother got a full-time job and focused on making their lives better. At first, Kaia was happy to suddenly have more money, the rumour of having a pet soon - but her mother didn't have time for her, and was always so... tired. Abstracted at dinner - which they ate late, always - her mother didn't have the time to pay attention to her or her grades.
Still, Kaia tried to make her proud, but eventually tired of just following her around, hoping to be noticed. The family friends made it worse - they descended on the household, consoling and supporting her mother and talking down to her in a way she hated, until she walked out to get some time to herself. Since then, she's used her mother's distance to explore her newfound freedom, often wandering around on the streets without much regard for her own safety.

The clock ticked inexorably onward, and Kaia didn't need to look at it sourly to know the truth.
Mom was late. Again.
It was a usual event now, and there hadn't been time to make dinner anyways. They ate ready made food now, so she could have eaten by herself, but at the same time... dinner was the only time she got to talk to mom, so it made sense to wait. Still... the sun hadn't gone down yet, and the air inside the house was stuffy. She had walked home from school by herself - of course, because there was no one to walk home with, and mom was still at work - so it made sense that she could just take a walk around the street by herself. Besides, it was still light out, she could hear some kids laughing outside... everything was totally fine. She'd be back before mom was, and they'd eat dinner together, and everything would be...
Fine. As much as it could be. The house was so small, so empty without her dad and Curtis to nag her and carry her around, to play catch with. Still, she would manage. With a stern glower at the clock, in case it betrayed her and her mom came home earlier than expected, the girl marched over and slipped outside, breathing in the late afternoon air with relief. It wasn't that the house thronged with ghosts -
There were too many people-shaped holes there for her to be comfortable. Maybe they'd be filled, or she'd learn to ignore them, but until then... better to be outside.
