Was doing a little bit of reading today. Someone came up with the idea of getting people to do community service (or something like that [by promise of monetary rewards] and getting schools to make it mandatory (even college students) [by toying with their funding]. Should it be mandatory for students? Should money be used to encourage it?
Another thing... I can't help but wonder as to how jobs are assigned. Like who gets the comfy desk job and who's scraping up road kill. This could be abused in very bad ways.

How dare they try and use it for people with college! I have to pay, PAY, out of MY OWN POCKETS for classes. No one has any lousy right to claim that I need to do some mandatory community service.
But to graduate from high school you needed 40 volunteer hours minimum. That was complete bull! You took some forms and then got the person in charge of wherever you were volunteering at to sign their name, then you made a copy and then turned it in to one person who was in charge of the volunteer hours. Load of crock in my opinion.
lol. I didn't realize it was in the debate room until a few seconds ago. Ahem. -clears throat- So no, I do not think people should have to do any forced volunteering.

It goes against the whole idea of the thing. "Volunteering" rather implies that those involved... volunteer. Community service has its place, of course. It's fine as a punishment for minor offences, and fine when people actually volunteer, but having had my school try to force me into it, I object. I used my devotion to the school library instead.

I don't like it either. Not only because of how it can be abused, but for two other reasons. One it can be expanded to other areas of life.** Two.... Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution 1865 anyone?
**Beloved .Gov: Why not? Guys can already go to jail for a very long time if they don't register for selective service.
