Ara couldn't stand this! She's had a run-in with a vampire and gotten scarped up pretty bad at every angle. She could heal herself for the most part, but there were four long and deep claw marks stretching down her back, which she couldn't reach unfortunately. She didn't know anyone in this wretched town, so no one was willing to help her. She'd only come to get rid of that bloodsucker, which she'd done... just barely. And she despised hospitals. Everyone's always staring.
So now she was sitting, blood dripping everywhere from her, waiting for the doctor. Well, this doesn't seem suspicious. A girl bleeding all over the place and covered with claw marks... She groaned, ignoring the staring eyes. Most embarassing thing she'd ever had to do. But no one else could heal her. But after the doctor wrapped her up she'd probably have to leave before they could get hold of her. They'd probably turn her in to the NYPD unless she could get out before they could catch her.
Hurt or not, she was still fast. They were lucky if they could get her to tell them her name. Someone passed her stared with wide eyes and a terrified expression. "What you lookin at?" she snapped grimly, then leaned back with her arms folded, ignoring the pain from her bleeding back.

sick of feeling numb rather feel pain than nothing at all.
Blood stained the side of her pale face, plastering her long, dark hair against her skull as it dried. The wound had long since clotted and stopped bleeding, but it was still deep. Nicola pulled her arm out from the grip of an EMT practically dragging her across the emergency room, another following behind, pushing her along. Another trip, another waste of money. The amount she’d been paid to escort some creepy vampire to a party was more than enough to pay off the bills she had amassed over the years and up until she finally just died, but she still hated being there.
“Let go of me! I told you I’m fine! It’s just a little blood. I just hit my head a little bit!” she insisted, struggling vainly to remove herself. Nicola, however, was well known at this hospital by most of the staff due to her condition, so the EMTs weren’t about to just let her walk out no matter what she needed. “I just need some stitches or something! I promise!” Everyone always freaked out when she got hurt. . . . Why the hell had someone felt the need to call an ambulance? It didn’t even hurt!
Then again, nothing ever hurt when it came to the CIPA patient. Every scratch, every bump. . . there was no pain. She had bruises she never felt, she had scars she couldn’t even remember. . . scars lined her lips from where she chewed on herself when she was little. . . . No, the doctors weren’t going to let her leave until they had done a full check up.
Growling to herself, Nicola stopped struggling, well aware that if she tried any harder to get out of his grasp she’d end up dislocating her shoulder or something on accident, then that’d just be more for her parents to worry about. She could already bet that they were on their way to check on her. It always seemed to surprise them when they got a call informing them she was in the hospital, like it didn’t happen four times a week. At least they didn’t worry about money anymore. . . sure they worried about how she got it, but Elric had come up with a decent enough explanation to placate them.
The EMT shoved her down onto a table next to another girl and she glared up at them. “Stay there. . . the doctor will be with you shortly,” the EMT rumbled before walking off. They glanced back to make sure that she was going to stay, and then went back to take more calls. Nurses and doctors, however, continued to glance back at the dark-haired young woman, making her roll her eyes and huff indignantly.
Nicola glanced around the wide emergency room and her gaze landed on the other woman in the room, the curtain pulled back so that she could see. She thought about pulling the curtain forward to give them each their privacy, but then she caught sight of the wounds. She wished she could say they looked like they hurt, but she truthfully didn’t know. The girl looked like she got in a fight with a bear. . . or a wolverine or something. Nicola looked better off than her, but the side of her face was pretty bloody. “Did you get attacked by a wild animal?” she asked, tilting her head to the side and trying to be friendly or something. She just needed something to do to stave off the boredom.

Ara just sat there, waiting for her doctor to find his way over to her. While she was waiting, though, a dark-haired girl was being dragged in. I just hit my head a little bit, she was shouting. A little bit? She was bleeding everywhere. But by the way she sounded, it seemed like she wasn't feeling any pain at all. And all those scars? Definitely something up with that.
Ara was never one for making conversations with other while waiting in the ER, but since this girl spoke first, she groaned slightly. A wild animal, huh? Does a werewolf count as a while animal? she thought grimly. "Yeah," she nodded slowly, examining the girl more closely now. "A wild animal."
She glanced away, finishing her examination of her new acquaintance. Human. She'd clearly been the hospital frequenty. The guys dragging her in seemed to be used to this. Then she thought of something. She was a CIPA patient, probably. Why else would they get all freaked out over her rather than Ara. Ara was just as bad, if not in worse shape, than this brunette girl. Even though Ara hated making conversation, she couldn't help but ask, "What about you? Wild animal...?" she knew it probably wasn't, but technically Ara wasn't attacked by a wild animal either. But he was wild, all right. And part of him was an animal. But now he was dead.

The girl confirmed her ailment, and Nicola nodded her head in understanding. It looked like a friggen bear attacked her or something, and she wondered for a moment if perhaps the poor girl had run into some sort of immortal. . . one of them weres, probably. She didn’t know if vampires would attack quite like that. . . . As far she knew, vampires just liked to kidnap and bite, not maul their prey. Did this girl even know what had attacked her? She had to be human. . . Nicola didn’t think that an immortal would go to the hospital.
“What about you? Wild animal. . . ?” she asked in return. Nicole chuckled slightly. Did it really look like she had had some sort of animal on top of her? The only wound she had right then was the gash in her head. . . maybe she was just trying to be funny or something.
The dark haired girl shook her head and just sighed. “Nah. . . I wasn’t paying attention and tripped and fell into the corner of a brick wall. I’m kind of accident prone like that,” she explained with the tiniest of smirks. It wasn’t a false statement. . . she was often getting hurt because she wasn’t paying attention. Pain was a great motivator for such things, but because she’d never felt it, she didn’t know that paying attention was a good thing.
Though you’d think she’d figure it out after the first seven times of being dragged to the hospital for similar injuries that she needed to pay attention, especially since she hated going. . . . They always did all kinds of tests on her to make sure she was fine. . . but she had just hit her head.
“Really they’re making a big deal out of it. . . between you and me, I’d rather not be here at all. . . it’s not like my head will heal on its own and I’m sure we have some tape stitches at my house. . . . If not there’s always duct tape. Duct tape fixes everything. Don’t see why it couldn’t fix this gash,” she said with a slight laugh, shaking her head. Rolling her eyes again and glaring at a nurse that glanced over her shoulder to make sure Nicola was still there, she turned to her companion and said “My name’s Nicola, by the way.”

Ara just listened. She knew a wild animal hadn't attcked her. What wild animal only hit someone in the head and then left them alone? As another nurse passed by, giving Ara a nervous glimpse at all her wounds, Ara just gave her a dark glare and she hurried passed. Ara just smirked slightly. She fell into a corner of a brick wall? That sounded so ridicules, Ara didn't know whether to believe it or not. Who falls into a wall? Clumsy girl...
Between you and me, I rather not be here at all... Ara nodded in agreement. "I never come here unless I absolutely have to..." she admitted. But, Ara had no sense of humor. She was too dark, too serious, to even crack a small smirk at what Nicola said about the duct tape. Then the girl introduced herself. Ara just nodded and glanced at her, "I'm Ara."

Nicola sighed and leaned back against the bed. Only when she had to, huh? That was usually what everyone did. . . no one wanted to come into the emergency room for just a small bump, bruise, or cut. “I always end up getting dragged in here for the smallest things. . . you’d think my parents had never seen someone get hurt ever. I bet they’re on their way now, thinking I’m dying or something,” she muttered, her arms spread and wrists dangling off the sides of the bed. For all she knew, though, she could be dying. But that was what happened. . . people died.
The other girl’s lack of response to her well spoken joke made Nicola raise her eyebrows and then just roll her eyes, turning her head to stare up at the tiled ceiling, pursing her lips together and forcing air through them in a very loud, irritated sigh. At least the girl had enough sense to return the introduction. Ara. That had to be short for something, but Nicola didn’t care enough to ask or even dig further into it.
After a minute of silence and still no doctors showing up, Nicola turned her bloodied head to look at the other human, examining her own bloody wounds. She couldn’t hold it in anymore. . . she had to ask the question, and she knew it was going to sound extremely strange, but she had to know. No one had ever been able to explain it to her, and though she wasn’t sure if this girl would know how to explain it, but it was worth a shot. “What’s it like?” she queried, propping herself up on her elbows. “Hurting, I mean. Pain. What’s it like?”

When Ara said she only came when she absolutely had to, she didn't mean like a normal person would. She was shot, scraped, stabbed, bitten, tackled, and who knows what else many times before. And none of those times had she gone to the doctor. The only reason she went now was because she had a really deep up down her back, and she could reach it to clean it herself. And she was new around here, so no one was willing to help her. So, there she was at the hospital, and hating every moment of it.
Even though Ara didn't look that interested in what Nicola was saying, she was listening. She'd never met a CIPA patient before. It was actually kind of interesting to see how hurt her head was and for her to seem completely unphased. Her parents probably had a right to worry, but she didn't doubt if they overreacted. That was a parent's job, at least for the most part. Although Ara had no idea what that was like. She never really went through any of that, not with her parents, anyway.
Then, Nicola asked about pain. That only confirmed her suspicions about the CIPA. "It depends on the type of wound," she replied, her tone emotionless. "Some burn, some throb, some sting, although those words probably mean nothing to you." She looked at her then. "It's harder to explain than it sounds."

sick of feeling numb rather feel pain than nothing at all.
The dark haired young woman turned her head and cocked it to the side while she listened to her temporary companion’s explanation. It was just as unsatisfactory as it always was. . . vague and filled with words she’d never experienced before. Except maybe throb. . . she’d done a lot of research in some attempt to understand what pain was like. . . . Nicola could assume that it was the same sort of feeling when her heart beat, since that was kind of throbbing was. . . the others, though. . . that was another story.
She just sighed and nodded her head before lying back on the table. “I know it is. Thanks for trying though,” she replied, deciding to ignore whatever problems this girl had. She was trying to be conversational, though she sure as hell didn’t seem that interested in talking to her or something. She was probably just as upset about being there as Nicola was, and the last thing she wanted was probably some strange girl chatting her up.
The silence stretched, broken by the sounds of shoes on the tiled floor as people walked this way and that, doing their jobs. Sirens blared outside the walls as another ambulance was called out for probably some sort of car crash or something. An ER doctor walked by and Nicola looked up, hoping it was someone who was going to look over her and get this over with. The doctor stopped and looked at her, then greeted her with a smile. Nicola rolled her eyes and just muttered a hello before he moved on. Like she would be proud of knowing all the ER doctors. . . .
“That’s it. I’m out of here,” she muttered, slapping her hands against the semi comfortable bed. She swung her legs and kicked herself back to her feet before she started off toward the door. She didn’t get very far before a nurse was in her way, giving her a sour look. Nicola eyed her, weighing the pros and cons of making a break for it, and then went for it. A few nurses and doctors didn’t let her get very far, declaring that they just wanted to help her, and then carried her back to her bed, threatening to sedate her before she tore her arms out of their grips and then just pushed herself to the head of the bed and brooded there, glaring at the floor as they walked away. They were probably waiting for her parents to arrive before testing her.
Snorting, Nicola thought about throwing something at them, but refrained. “I hate this,” she muttered angrily.

Ara nodded a "your welcome" but said nothing. She wasn't very good at explainging things, and especially not to somebody who didn't know what all those words meant. But she couldnt' blame Nicola. How could she know what sting meant? She'd never experienced it, so there was no way, but she might be able to picture something if she had a wide imagination. And Ara didn't doubt that Nicola had a good imagination. Ara, however, had almost none at all.
She couldn't help but enjoy watching her try to leave. She actually found it sort of amusing. But if Ara was planning on getting up and walking away, she would have done it ages ago. She'd been sitting there for almost an hour, her back bleeding all the way down the sort-of-comfortable cot. Finally one of the doctors came in, asked what had happened, like Ara would actually tell him the truth. "Wild animal," was all she told the doctor, giving a glance at Nicola as she replied to him, and then answered a few of his pointless questions. Age, height, weight, blah blah. God, I hate hospitals! she shouted in her head.
But the doctor wrapped up all her cuts, bruises, and deep wounds. After he finished that, he had to move on to one of his more urgent patients. But Ara didn't leave right away, even though she wanted to. A part of her was actually kind of interested in Nicola. She didn't know if it was because she couldn't feel pain, or if it was for her little outburst of trying to escape. Maybe it was something else entirely, but she stayed in the little ER lobby near where Nicola sat. She didn't know what she expected Nicola to say to her, just standing and staring, clearly in a lot of pain. Even though her face was mostly emotionless, Ara flinched every so often from the deep trench that dragged across the small of her back.

sick of feeling numb rather feel pain than nothing at all.
A doctor came by at last, but it was for the girl next to her – what had she said her name was? For the life of her, Nicola couldn’t remember. It had happened just moments ago, but she hadn’t the slightest clue. . . it started with an R or something. . . or. . . bah it was gone. Completely wiped from her memory. It didn’t have anything to do with the current wound to her head – well, it didn’t help that was for sure – but more likely from the tons of other head injuries she had received because of her habit of not paying attention where she was going. She figured she’d just ask again later.
Where were her parents? She knew they had been informed that she was there. . . was traffic bad? They’d moved closer to the hospital for just this reason. . . maybe they were out of the house at work or at a restaurant or something. . . who knew. She just hoped they showed up soon. Her head turned a few degrees in each direction to see if she could find something, an exit, or maybe see her parents coming. . . but it was just some chairs, some cots, and some medical equipment and a lot of nurses who had nothing better to do than to make sure the girl who didn’t want any treatment stuck around so she could get it. Wasn’t there something in the constitution about this? Honestly. . . she shouldn’t have to sit there if she didn’t want to. . . .
Nicola watched the other girl get her treatment, get all patched up and the expressions on her face – the expressions especially. It gave her a little insight to what pain might feel like, but she tried not to stare for too long – and her concentration was shattered when her parents arrived in a flurry of loud voices and doctors telling them that she was fine. “Oh god, here it comes,” she muttered to herself, rolling her eyes and getting to her feet as her two worried parents came careening around the corner and making a beeline toward her. There was the whole explanation thing, and the assurances that she was fine, and then finally the doctor showed up.
“Please, don’t take any freaking tests. . . . I know why you need to, but I promise you don’t need to! I just tripped and hit my head. Just give me some stitches and I’ll be fine,” she insisted, nearly plead, looking between the doctors and her parents. The single declaration started a rather heated discussion, and to her pleasure, her parents were on her side for once. At last the doctor relented, and she was brought to the back to get her stitches.
It took a little while for them to clean the wound and get her all sewn up, and then they sent her off. Now all she had to do was ditch her parents: she didn’t want to deal with their lectures and their questions, so she had to get rid of them. “I don’t want to go home. It’s not too late!” she said, glaring up at her parents as she was escorted out after all of the paperwork had filled out.
When they asked her why she didn’t want to go home, what she possibly had to do, her eyes fell on the girl who’s own treatment seemed to have come to an end, and an idea flopped onto her mind. Oh god she just hoped that she’d play along! “Because. . . my new friend and were going to go have coffee after we got released!” she said quickly and almost mechanically, running to the girl’s side and giving her a pleading look.

Ara just watched at the doctor and Nicola's parents argued about her. Poor girl. Ara didn't know what it was like to have a family that would argue about what was best for her. Heck, she didn't know what it was like to have a family at all. But she did find their arguement slightly entertaining. And then they were arguing about going home, after she'd been all fixed up.
And before she knew it, Nicola was by her side, blaming her curfew issues on her. What makes her think that Ara wanted anything to do with this little painless freak? Although, as she thought about, being an evil vampire/demon/werewolf slayer wasn't exactly the most non-freakish thing ever, either. She sighed then, defeated, and nodded to her parents, "Yes," even though she hated coffee, usually all she had was wine or beer anyway, to take the edge off her mythical murders. "I invited her to coffee," she lied through her teeth, but tried to sound halfway geniune.

sick of feeling numb rather feel pain than nothing at all.
For a few tense moments Nicola thought she was going to be ratted out, and her heart slowly started to sink. She didn’t want to go home. . . she didn’t want to get lectured about being careful and not tripping and falling into a wall by pure chance. Yeah, because people didn’t fall into things all the time, right? No one else in the world ever got hurt except her, so they had to make a big deal out of it. Nicola continued to plead with the other girl with her expression, trying not to look at her parents for fear that they might catch on.
“Yes. I invited her to coffee,” the girl finally said, making Nicola’s heart soar. She tried hard not to collapse with relief and just turned to her parents, giving them a stern yet hopeful look. Her parents looked at each other, sharing glancing, and then sighed and decided that it would be fine. Nicola was glad they didn’t ask for the other girl’s name, and when they asked to see if they wanted a ride to the shop, Nicola hastily denied and said that the shop was just a block away or so. She knew they were worried about whether or not she was going to go falling into walls again, and she assured them that she’d be fine and that it had just been a freak accident. Reluctantly, they left without their daughter, leaving her with her new “friend.”
Sighing once they were out of the door, Nicola turned back to the girl and gave her an apologetic smile. “Um. . . sorry about that. Thanks, though. I really didn’t want to go home to be lectured though. I don’t really expect you to get coffee with me or anything, I was just trying to get out of going home,” she admitted, rolling her eyes at the thought of the lecture before shuffling slightly. “Hope you’re not too mad at me for using you like that.”

Ara didn't really mind being used. The only time someone had ever used her before was a terrible experience. But she knew what it was like to be lectured for something a thousands times. She'd been though that enough in her life. She didn't blame Nicola for wanting to get out of the lecture, even if she was only delaying it rather than stopping it.
Hope you’re not too mad at me for using you like that. She only shrugged and shook her head slightly, not really knowing what else to do. She'd never really had a friend before, or someone who was actually willing to be one to her. Sure, she had some people who she trusted, but that wasn't the same. There was one other who Ara really had grown to be great friends with, but now she hated her, and they'd probably kill one another if they ever ran into each other again. Since then, Ara had had no friends. Just enemies, and most of them were dead now, from Ara's doing.
But this girl wasn't some kind of supernatural creature like everyone else Ara had really talked to had been. She was just a simple human, and apparently one who couldn't feel anything. That actually did get Ara's attention. Things like that she always found an interest in. "Well... do you want to get coffee?" Even though coffee wasn't really her thing, Ara would be willing to go if it meant a possible friend who she knew wouldn't try to kill her later. Right now, she really needed one of those. A real friend.

Nicola blinked at the other girl and then cocked her head to the side slightly. She was really asking if Nicola wanted to get some coffee? She thought for sure the other woman would have been a little upset, or maybe a tiny bit disgruntled, but she didn’t seem to be. . . well. . . anything. It was kind of creepy. “Oh. Well, I mean if you want to. I was going to get some coffee, but you don’t have to. I was just saying that to get out of going home. . . . But for sure, if you want to get some coffee I don’t mind you coming with. . . . Though I insist that I pay, since I kinda of sandbagged you back there,” Nicola offered, smiling and straightening her spine out. She didn’t really mind the girl’s company – or anyone’s, for that matter – so it would be no big deal with she went and got a cup of joe with her.

So it was Ara's decision then. Oh boy. Go and try to act normal? Or just say "never mind" and go find another freak of nature to kill... Even though Ara loved killing evil vamps and werewolves, she was kind of siding with the first option. The girl said she was going to get coffee anyway, and Ara really didn't have any friends do to her creepy emotionless apparel. Maybe it was for the best to try to make a new friend... maybe it was give her a little spark in her completely still expression.
She nodded then, making up her mind. "I guess I'll come." Her tone might sound a little hesitant, but that was only because she had no idea what else to say. She was terrible when it came to anything social, especially when it came to keeping a conversation going.
