& The moon shone brightly over the tightly-packed street, a din of noise drownig out all else – the clang of items together, the clamor of hundreds of people trying to talk over the each other, the squeal of tires one street over – but one young woman stopped all of the talk around her as she sauntered by like she owned that street, her long, straight blonde hair swaying with her deliberate steps and the occasional swing of her head as she turned to meet the glances she received through the dark purple lenses of her large sunglasses. Why she was wearing sunglasses in such lighting – little to none – was only one of the reason she was receiving glances and double takes. . . .
& The girl just didn’t belong. Surrounding her were tanned, dark-haired people wearing nothing fancy, nothing too colorful. This woman. . . her bleach blonde hair stood juxtaposed against the people and the dark veil of night that covered the hustling, small city. Her clothes – though still varying mute colors, from her light gray shirt to her dark blue, almost black, skinny jeans – were name brand and stood out against whatever the others happened to find lying around. Her large, deep red, tiger-striped bag was the brightest thing on the street next to her hair. . . . She looked very much like a tourist, but she was the only one on the street. The only one that would ever be on this street unless one happened to get lost. The woman was not in a tourist trap, yet she didn’t look lost. . . .
& Mara Nyx knew exactly where she was supposed to be, where she was going. She was not wearing her usual skin, though. Her normal tall, lithe, darkened body. . . she would have fit in with the crowd like that, but that wasn’t her style. Even when Mara was attempting to be incognito she had to stand out among the crowd and have all eyes on her. Of course, if she had been in her normal skin, someone might have recognized her, known who she was. . . she could have that happening here. Not when everyone she knew in this part of the country thought she was dead. That would just muck up her plans!
& However, she couldn’t hold this guise much longer. Not when it made her feel so tired, so drained. Mara had kept the illusion going much longer than she normally did, about two hours. Normally the illusions she used to change how she looked lasted maybe half an hour. . . the vampiress had been practicing, working on her stamina for her illusions. The bigger ones still didn’t last very long, but they lasted a lot longer than they had before. But now she was starting to feel the effects and she would need a break. She swore inwardly, keeping the same neutral frown of a person who was on a mission – the only reason these people were leaving her alone. If she’d pretended to be a lost little girl, they would have been all over her, trying to pickpocket or kidnap her. If you exude and air of confidence, it will intimidate people, and that was something Mara Nyx was good at – she had been hoping she’d be able to get to her temporary domicile before she had to take a break. . . .
& Glancing around, Mara placed the hand that wasn’t carrying her bag on her hip and huffed in irritation, tapping her heeled shoe once or twice before she kept going and then slipped into an alleyway and out of sight, throwing up another quick illusion of the empty alleyway she had just burned into her skull a second ago, now feeling the equivalent to a human who had just sprinted one hundred meters. The exact reason she had thrown up the image of the empty alley happened – a few men stood in the entrance and peered inside. Mara smirked with her foreign lips and waited for them to walk all the way through, looking confused and speaking among themselves in her natural tongue. Once they were gone, Mara dropped the illusion and wedged herself between a large cardboard box and what she could only imagine was a broken air condition unit.
& Both knees up, arms resting against her caps, Mara tried to catch her breath. Though not required to breathe, the gasping breaths helped her to center herself and keep what blood she had in her system since last feeding pumping through her being and replenishing what energy she had. She would need to feed again when she woke the next night, but she had enough energy after this break to get herself back to the two bit hotel she was staying at. The thought repulsed her: she had the money for a five-star, but they always had top-notch security and surveillance. . . . Well, it was her fault for accepting a job here. Mara was always up for a challenge, but she hadn’t been back in South America since before she had faked her death to escape her parents.
& Her thoughts were interrupted with the sound of footsteps and she scoffed. Not enough to energy to disguise herself. . . well there was always the option of killing them if they pegged her for who she was. It would also be a nice opportunity for a quick snack, too. Hopefully the person wandering down this alley was not associated with her parents. Hopefully for them, not Mara. Mara loved any excuse to have some excitement.
