ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Ginny had eagerly accepted her invitation to come inside and Anastasia beamed and pulled open the gate that allowed people to walk through. The larger gate was for those in cars. Once Ginny was through, she closed the gate and led her up the gravel driveway toward the front of the house. Anastasia could hear her pack in the back, and she glanced at Ginny, hoping it didn’t unnerve her too much. They probably wouldn’t even go outside at all. The other pack hadn’t been around humans before, and Anastasia knew she could control them—or rather, command them. They normally listened—but even if they started running at Ginny, that could be rather traumatizing. The walk didn’t last long, and Anastasia pulled a key out of her pocket—dripping wet—and she stared at it for a moment before her eyes went wide. She stuck the key in the slot and then started to feel around in her pockets frantically, repeating “No, no, no!” over and over again until she pulled out her cell phone. It was soaking, and the screen was discolored.
Aastasia let out a loud sigh and she stared forlornly at her phone. Then, something else hit her and she frantically tried to turn on her phone, but it fizzled loudly and refused to turn on. Tears welled in Anastasia’s eyes and she shook her head as if she couldn’t believe it. The only pictures of her recently-murdered best friend were on that phone, and now they were probably all lost. You have company. Compose yourself! You can fret about your dead friend later, the voice reminded her. Anastasia blinked and looked up at Ginny as if she had just remembered that she was there. Laughing nervously, Anastasia wiped the tears from her eyes and unlocked the front door and pushed it open, indicating for her to walk through. “Sorry,” she apologized meekly. She probably looked silly, crying over a phone. The phone itself could be replaced with ease. It was the pictures—and the number she had attempted to call for the past week, hoping that one day someone would answer—that she was worried about.

Wait a minute. Did Anastasia have more than one hyena on the premises? Ginny sucked on her lower lip nervously, but didn't glance at her newly found friend. Why let her know that a pack of hyenas-- capable of tearing her limb from limb and crushing her bones--frightened her? Just looking at the scenery should be enough to calm her instinct to run back into the woods. Besides, the indoors may lack any large-jawed dogs, right? Right...?
Ana's sudden outburst of emotion stopped Ginny dead in her tracks so she could fix her eyes on her. Why was she so upset? The soaking wet, malfunctioned cell-phone answered her question-and the red head pursed her lips in thought. Now, why would she be so distressed over that object? Well, if she lost her iPhone she'd be pissed over losing hundreds of songs, photos of her little dog, numbers, and assignments she had for her club. Still, it's clear there was something more than losing technology to water...
"Oh, it's fine," Ginny beamed at her, "I'd be irritated if my phone gave out after getting soaked. I lost a cell once to the screen shattering; and that was frustrating since I couldn't access anything. At all."

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Anastasia was still able to sense a sort of unease coming from the girl, and it made her want to know why. The small girl had always been incredibly attuned to what people were feeling around her, like some sort of hyper-empathy. Not anything like an empath, just that she was able to recognize what people felt. It was why she always felt horrible when someone was angry with her, and why she always wanted to make everyone around her happy. . . . So they wouldn’t be angry at her or sad. Even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness.
The little blonde hyena couldn’t help but smile when Ginny expressed no distaste for her little outburst of emotion and she just nodded her head, leading her further into the grounds. Instinctively Anastasia glanced around the gravel path, trying to find Urjasz’ car. Her heart sank when it was gone—how long had he been away? It seemed as though he had only just returned from his last trip. . . . Now he was gone again. Had she done something wrong?
Oh stop that. Who knows what goes through the mind of a man. Focus on this moment or you could lose this chance of getting a new friend! that annoying little voice chimed, making Anastasia hang her head slightly with shame. Was she a bad person for worrying about people? Herself? She didn’t want to think so, but sometimes it seemed like she did. She had company over and she needed to be gracious host, not moping around because now she had nothing to remember Kyla by or because the man she’d slept with had ran off again.
The thought made Anastasia blush, as if Ginny could read her mind. She turned to look back at the red-head, but. . . . There was no way Ginny could have known what she thinking. She needed to stop worrying so much and stop freaking out about every little thing! Shaking her head, Anastasia slipped into her mask and smiled brightly as she pulled open the door to the mansion and stepped aside to let Ginny enter first. Once she was in, Anastasia closed the door behind her and then gestured to the entrance hall with a warm smile.
“I know it’s a little much. . . but it’s home for me now. Please make yourself at home and feel free to look around. . . . Would you like me to get you something to drink or eat? We’re fully stocked on a lot of things. . . ,” Anastasia said. It seemed as if she practiced the line over and over again, but Anastasia was naturally a good host. Pleasing people was what she did best, even if it was just her friend.

"Holy crap, Anastasia this place is huge!" Exclaimed Ginny who's eyes were wider than pizza pies while looking the inside over. The little writer rarely got a chance to see a home as large as this and her overactive imagination began to settle in. What if the house had secret passage ways or traps that she'll have to avoid? Ahah-- this'll make things even more exciting. "It's a lovely place! I'm almost envious." Ginny was, however, content in her little apartment with sparse furnishings--it was all she could afford anyways.
"Oh, don't trouble yourself. I appreciate it but I'd hate to have someone do that for me."
While Ginny was parched, she didn't want to have Ana --especially after that earlier incident--to do too much until she was alright. For now, she'll hide how thirsty she is and change the subject.
"How long have you been here?"

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Anastasia couldn’t help but smile as Ginny complimented her house. Her expression seemed similar to a child who had just walked into a candy store. Anastasia turned from her and looked around. The winding staircase was by far Anastasia’s favorite feature of the building, but all in all it was large. . . and empty. The Novosi were here of course under order from Urjasz to keep her company and to make sure she was staying out of trouble. But they were mostly vampires so she didn’t see them for the most part except at night, but at least she knew she could sleep with at least some sort of security.
Of course, just knowing that someone was in the building helped her not feel so lonely. If there wasn’t anyone living in the mansion besides herself, she would have miserable. Her hyenas kept her company sometimes, too.
Her offer of something refreshing was turned down and Anastasia nodded her head, then almost missed Ginny’s question when her thoughts became lost for a moment or two as she thought of what she wanted to do. Shaking her head, she turned back to Ginny and looked thoughtful for a moment. She had to think back to when she had first met Daktari and that night when he—when she’d moved in to the mansion. How long ago had that been? A year and a half? It was hard to believe with everything that had happened. “Um. . . a little more than a year. Maybe a year and a half.”
Looking at her damp clothes, Anastasia sighed. “I’m going to go put on some dry clothes. . . feel free to wander around and I’ll be back in a couple minutes, promise,” she said, feeling slightly bad for leaving her guest alone for a little while. Hopefully none of the Novosi would bother her while she was gone.

"Don't worry about me," she said with a smile, "I'll be around here for sure." The red head briskly walked away from Anastasia to look around, all the while, humming "Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, a pirate's life for me" under her breath. Changing shouldn't take too long for her newly found friend, so, she felt it would be alright to peek around as long as she didn't touch anything. Then, her ADD kicked in...
"Disable a few laser cannons," she quoted from the all too familiar Treasure Planet, "what's the big deal? All we have to do is find that one little wi-" she opened one of the doors, but instead of finding her imaginary wires, she saw a tall, pale, fearsome male glaring at her. A moment of silence passed, and then, Ginny resumed her quoting in a more frantic tone than the voice actor used.
"OH MAMA!" She slammed it shut and braced herself against it, a comical, terrified look on her face. Whoever it was on the other side slammed against it and the door flew open with almost inhumane strength. A sharp yelp ripped from Ginny's throat, and she nearly fell face first onto the floor. "That's...NOT A WIRE!" The red head got to her feet and sprinted down the hall she came from away from whoever it was.

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Ginny’s words of reassurance made Anastasia feel better about ducking out for a few minutes, so she nodded her head and scurried up the winding staircase to the floor her room was. Of course, it would take a couple minutes just to walk there. . . . It was such a huge place. Again, the small girl couldn’t help but stop at the door next to hers. . . the one Kyla had lived in. She stood there in front of it, not facing or looking at it, but just standing there. Sighing, she took a few more steps forward and then pushed her door, closing it behind her so she could change her clothes in privacy. It didn’t take too much time, but then she had to walk all the way back down the stairs. . . .
What she found—or rather heard—wasn’t the best thing. Anastasia reached the bottom of the stairs and thought he heard Ginny’s yelling, and fast footsteps echoing down the halls. The small girl’s eyes widened and she bolted down the hall. Down here the windows were all tinted and covered to make it easier for the vampires to walk through the house. Anastasia rounded a corner, heading off Ginny and the vampire. She knew this place like the back of her hand by now and it hadn’t been hard to find a short cut through a room with two entrances.
Anastasia stopped dead and let Ginny pass her before yelling “She’s with me!” The Novosi guard skidded to a stop and looked questioningly at Ginny before asking something in Russian. Anastasia responded and in kind and smiled at the vampire before giving him a small half-bow. “Sorry for startling you,” she said to the Novosi before turning to Ginny, looking concerned. “Did he hurt you? Are you okay? I’m so sorry. . . . I should have told you about the guards but I didn’t think you’d ever see one. . . .”

"EEEEE-" Ginny's squealing was stopped with thanks to Ana's timely appearance. A long sigh of relief later, and she felt her limbs were turning into jello. Wait, what the he-Russian? Why are they talking in Russian? The still distraught writer watched the two briefly talk, feeling sure at this point that she was safe. It was then she noticed something: the male had ivory canines. Whatever color she had, it drained away in the blink of an eye. A v-vampire?
Ginny immediately planted her hand over a scar over her jugular where a vampire from months ago had bitten her. Whoever thought that a bite from a vampire was seductive...was terribly wrong. While her blood was being drained, she felt a dark, foreboding presence tear into her mind and delved into her sea of memories. Her being was violated with his presence alone and her life was vastly slipping away...Had it not been for a passerby, she would have perished. Slowly.
"Huh what? Yeah..." her hand slid into her pocket where she had a sheathed knife, "...yeah I'm fine..."

"Th-th-th..." she stammered, still unable to even form a simple word. Ginny's body was shaking at a noticeable level but it shouldn't be enough to raise too much alarm. One might simply think she only had a terrible scare from the big, bad vampire. "That...that was a vampire." There, she said it. It's not that hard to see a vampire once you've been brutally attacked by one--she had the scar on her neck to prove it too.
Once she took a seat, the still distraught writer released a shaky sigh and continuously rubbed her neck. Her actions alone would tell the story to Anastasia. "W-w-why do you have a vampire of all things guarding you in your home? Those things are dangerous!" Unless there's more to all this than meets the eye. Was she being protected by a Nosferatu or something? Oh, the thought of having sharp canines sink into her skin made Ginny feel queasy...

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← “That. . . that was a vampire.”
Freezing in place, Anastasia immediately bowed her head and held her hands together, now suddenly very nervous. She knew about vampires. What else did she know about? It had been easy enough for her to spot a vampire, and of course vampires weren’t hard to pick out when you knew what to look for. The werewolves and stuff. . . they were harder. You couldn’t easily pick them out until they were trying to maul you or were shifting. Well, Anastasia could never tell the difference between them. Now she had the advantage of having heightened senses. . . .
However, the main thing here was that this woman was freaking out—however mildly that may have been—because there was a vampire. What would she do if she found out what Anastasia was? It would be hard not to tell her, though. She would have to explain what was going on, why he was here, what Anastasia was doing here. . . . Lying was not an option: Anastasia was a terrible liar. Everything about the poor little blonde girl made the perfect little tool, the perfect. . . slave. Trusting, meek, obedient. She racked her brain, trying to come up with something to tell her, even before Ginny asked her questions. Anastasia wasn’t the brightest bulb in the pack, but she wasn’t a complete moron.
Not looking up, Anastasia continued to wring her hands as she decided just to tell her, and leave out bits and pieces until it was necessary. “Ah. . . there are. . . more than one, here. They’re all members of a rather large family. . . . Think. . . Russian Mafia, but for. . . immortals. I was adopted into the family that these vampires—the Novosi—work for and I inherited the house when. . . the old owner died.” Was murdered. “So. . . they just. . . stick around to make sure that I stay out of trouble,” Anastasia finished.
Anastasia cautiously lifted her head to look at Ginny, hoping to read what she was thinking from her expression. You are a pathetic individual, the voice reprimanded.

Ginny also froze while listening to Anastasia's explanation as to why there were vampires --egads, more than one?-- roaming around the house, unseen to any guest. Still, knowing that they were under her command and not going to attack, it brought a slight sense of relief to her. "As long as they won't do anything to me while I'm here, I won't mind staying. I always had a fascination with vampires until..." The red head swallowed and pulled her shirt to the side to reveal the puncture wounded scar. Along the outside of said wound, there was a slight taint. Looks like she was lucky enough to escape a possible curse from a vampire.
"I was walking through Central Park, minding my own business, when I heard a violinist playing. I got curious, drew closer, and saw a guy playing it. 'course, I didn't want to be rude and interrupt, so I walked off only to have him call out to me. It was only a few minutes of conversation that led me to having to fight him off. I put up a struggle, but, he got the better of me."
Ginny looked to Anastasia after covering up the wound, "He dove into my mind through my blood and saw my memories, my hopes, my fears...everything. I felt my entire existence was being violated when I was losing consciousness."

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Anastasia’s explanation seemed to make Ginny more at ease and Anastasia relaxed. She had accepted that rather easily, and it made Anastasia happy: she wouldn’t have potentially scare her away by telling her that she turned into a monstrous hyena sometimes and when that happened, people tended to be mauled. That. . . no that wouldn’t go over. Anastasia would hate herself more if she was always chasing people that might be friends because of what she was. . . she already hated herself enough.
Her attention was brought back to Ginny as she started to explain what had been going on with vampires. . . and how she had been attacked by one. Anastasia gave her a concerned look and took a quick look at the puncture wounds on her neck. How could that have felt? It had to have been worse than being bitten by Daktari. At least Daktari had stopped. This vampire. . . they had to have held on and dragged it out as long as they could. . . . All the while draining the poor girl of her life fluid. Anastasia knew a little bit of what it was like, as she had been attacked by a vampire by mistake on the subway once, but they had let go once they’d tasted her. A prolonged feeding. . . .? She shuddered.
But above all of this. . . this girl was human. Still. She had gotten away. . . unchanged. She had accomplished what Anastasia never would have been able to. And the fact that she said she had been able to fight him off for at least a little while—so long as Ginny wasn’t just saying this to look bigger—was more than anything Anastasia could have done. Daktari had given her an ultimatum, and she had had to choose. The lesser of two evils would have been to just let him kill her, but she was a coward. Dying was not an option for her, but she sometimes regretted it.
Finding her voice, Anastasia spoke up. “H-how did you get away? I wish I had been so—lucky,” Anastasia muttered, not really thinking about what she saying. She didn’t even really realize what she had said until that little voice in her head, her conscience, her sub-conscious mind, whatever, told her she was an idiot. Anastasia looked away, but hoped Ginny didn’t catch it.

"Uhm," Ginny removed the fake glasses she wore --sometimes it was fun to have them as a fashion statement, plus, she felt smarter. Somehow.--and folded them, placing them into the pocket of her coat, "well, it was by sheer luck, actually. Someone attacked the vampire and chased him off. Next thing I knew, I had woken up in the hospital and had to be given a blood transfusion." The red head smiled, "I was fortunate that night, because, I know he was going to make me his...slave." The idea of having no free will disgusted her.
"I haven't seen him since, so, maybe he thinks I'm no longer easy prey?"
Ginny recalled what Anastasia had said earlier, and squinted her eyes, "What do you mean by you wish you were that lucky? Did a vampire do something to you? I'm sure I can take care of him." The seemingly harmless writer drew out a sharp knife and brandished it fearlessly, "I can see it now, 'Ginny The Vampire Slayer'. Sounds like a bad mix of Harry Potter and Buffy, but, I'm sure it'll catch on."
Too bad one of the vampires in the house noticed the brandishing. A venomous look was tossed at her from across the room where one had just so happened to be, concealed in the shadows, and the human cowered.
"Uhhhh...later on, that is."

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Someone had come and chased the vampire away. That never would have worked on Daktari. It might have distracted him momentarily, but it might not have been long enough for her to even skitter off somewhere to hide. Anastasia smiled soothingly at the other girl and took a seat on the couch, hands folded neatly in her lap. “Oh, well I’m glad you were able to get away. . . . I don’t think he’d attempt to find you again merely because he could just as easily find a replacement. . . . Unless he really liked you, I guess,” Anastasia mused. She didn’t really have a single clue what she was talking about, but she hoped that it at least gave the woman a bit more piece of mind.
Anastasia winced visibly and turned to look away from the girl. She had caught her slip-up. She had never been any good at lying and she didn’t think she’d be able to pull it off. However, Ginny’s questions were quite straight-forward, yes or no questions. She wouldn’t have to lie, she would just have to answer Ginny’s questions as she asked them and leave them at that. “No, vampires didn’t do anything to me,” she replied, turning back to Ginny. She gave an amused little smile as she pulled out a knife, but Anastasia couldn’t help but doubt that this woman would be able to do a whole lot to the vampires with it except give it a flesh wound that made it angry.
Her head turned to the vampire posted in the room, obviously nervous about leaving during the day. The window in the room was shut tight with metal shutters over it to keep the sunlight out indefinitely. Anastasia hadn’t even noticed him: she was so used to them being around that they had just become part of the furniture, almost. Smiling, Anastasia waved her hand. She could understand Ginny’s fear of the vampires after being attacked like that, but she knew that Ginny would probably be able to handle her fear a lot better than Anastasia could ever handle hers. “Don’t worry. . . they’re relatively harmless.”
