"Sometimes the best thing one can do for writing is to go to the place they wish to write about, and observe. Take notes on what you see, what you hear, what you smell, and what stirs emotions within you. If you want to take a risk, do so. If you want to be careful, then be careful. Either way, do what you wish to strengthen the writer in you."
That's what Ginny remembered from a writing class she took a few years ago, and she felt it was time to venture out from the safety of her house to a place that few venture to. Thus far things seemed to be normal for the park, and she felt a little more at ease. A part of her was tempted to put on her headphones to listen to some calming music, but she did have to be on high alert. Who knows what could be lurking here!
Not too far off, she heard the sound of rushing water, and sought to investigate what potential scenery might be there. "Thank God for hiking boots..." She mumbled aloud. No one was around to talk to, so may as well talk with herself. Her cellphone did have service but who was there to call anyways? Her friends were busy with God-knows-what, and disturbing them was never wise.
Shame.
All thoughts of calling anyone melted away at the sight of the river. This was the perfect start to work on scenery in her book! Ginny immediately sat down on a rock, pulled out a pad and pencil, and began to write down everything she saw in bulletins first. Once she got the basics down, she will begin describing them in vivid detail. "But how to put this into my book...what scene...?"

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← The sound of sniffing was hard to discern from the rest of the sounds of the forest. This was not the native lands for this spotted creature and it frightened away any potential prey. The stocky little dog-like animal lifted its head and scented the air, ears twisting to hear this sound or that sound, and then an ear-splitting whistle made him jump. Its frequency was above what the average human could hear, and it was a specialty of the creature’s mistress. Ears flat against his head, the spotted hyena turned with his short tail between his legs and head low, thinking him in trouble. However, he perked up as a branch snapped and his mistress appeared, blonde hair up in a pony tail and small twigs poking out from the tail. Anastasia muttered something to herself and lifted a hand to pull some of the sticks out. “Kaiser, please don’t run off. . . I don’t want to spend my walk running around after you,” she muttered quietly. This was one of the first times Anastasia had been out in this part of the woods, but it was almost right outside the mansion and she didn’t have much else to do with her life at the moment. Might as well explore while the sun was up and the crazies were on break.
Kaiser whimpered quietly, his jaw moving, and then looked out over the woods, his ears perked and jaws parted. Anastasia had heard it too, but she thought it just her mind playing tricks on her. There was a river nearby, and that was the last thing Anastasia wanted to be by. . . a river. Water. Water killed people, and she was far from an Olympic swimmer. In fact, she didn’t even know how. However, Kaiser seemed to have a different plan. He took off running with a high-pitched cackle and Anastasia groaned to herself. “Kaiser! What did I just say!” Anastasia called, bending over to pull a stick from her boot that had gotten lodged in there before taking off after him at a much slower pace, following his scent and the sound of his paws on the loose sod. She picked up the pace when she heard him get further away from her. “Kaiser!” she called loudly, shoving two fingers in her mouth and letting out another ear-splitting whistle that made a flock of birds squawk and take off into the sky.
Anastasia broke through a small grove of trees where she had thought her exotic pet had disappeared, and then she had the distinct feeling of emptiness when her foot slipped on the bank in her carelessness. Ice-cold water filled Anastasia’s world for a moment, and she had a mini heart attack until her head resurfaced and she gasped loudly for air. Words failed her as she flailed around—ironically—like a fish out of water. However, her feet found the bottom of the river and she had purchase. Standing, the water was about to her shoulders where she had fallen in. On the other side of the river, a soggy-looking Kaiser was running, and he jumped into the water and paddled over to his mistress. Immediately Anastasia grabbed a hold of him, gasping and clinging to him like her life depended on it. Walking along the bottom while Kaiser paddled, Anastasia made it to the bank and started to clamber on dry land, gasping as if she was still in the water and shaking like a leaf from more than just the cold. For the moment she had complete tunnel vision, seeing only the path in front of her and not the other girl who was only a few yards away. . . .

A whistle? That's strange! Who else could be out here in the middle of no where? Ginny cautiously lowered her pen, looked over her shoulder, and scanned her surroundings to see if something will burst from the bushes. That didn't happen; but someone was nearby and she wasn't going to risk anything until she knew who was there. Next thing the red head knew, she heard a splash followed by another. Did a few people just decide to go for a swim? How strange! The water was cold and the weather wouldn't help matters much.
What Ginny didn't expect was to see a young woman holding onto what looked like a spotted hyena. The sight of those massive jaws set the young woman back; and she swiftly got to her feet for fear of suddenly being attacked should it get out of the water. Wait...was the blond actually holding, as in, clinging to the animal for dear life? That thing couldn't possibly be a pet! After having snapped out of her shocked state, Ginny snatched a large stick and extended it out to the two.
"Hey! Grab a hold! I'll try to pull you ashore! The waters get dangerous just a few feet away and you might be swept downstream! Hurry!"
And what a terrifying fact that was, for just ahead, the current was more violent and promised a death wish at a waterfall not too far off...

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Frightened and at wit’s end, Anastasia found it hard to find any grip on the slippery slope of the bank. Everything simply moved when she tried to haul herself up, and Kaiser wasn’t finding it much easier, either. His whimpers of frustration tore at Anastasia and she planted her feet, the current tugging at her waist and legs, trying to pull her further downstream. Hyenas didn’t spend much time in the water, but all animals knew how to doggy paddle. Anastasia fought back her own fears for a moment in order to shove Kaiser up on the slope and he scrambled up, yipping and cackling as he watched his mistress slip on a loose rock on the river bed and fall under again. She regained her balance and grabbed at the air, only to find that it was a large stick. Anastasia looked up and saw someone else looking down at her and her heart jumped in her throat from surprise, but she was not about to let go of that stick. “Hey! Grab a hold! I'll try to pull you ashore! The waters get dangerous just a few feet away and you might be swept downstream! Hurry!” the red-headed woman declared.
Oh, not the best thing to tell an already panicked, drowning girl. Anastasia looked downstream and let out a wail of fear before scrambling to get a better hold on the stick the woman had given her. Her hands gripped the limb tightly and she nodded her head in a succession of quick, jerky movements to indicate that she was ready to be pulled up. She didn’t want to pull too hard on her own end in case she accidentally sent the other woman in the water as well, so instead she held onto the branch firmly with one hand and clawed at the bank with her other, trying to pull herself up and push against the ground with her feet. With the combined effort of the two women, Anastasia was finally on dry ground, on the verge of near hyperventilation, her body soaking with the ice-cold water. Kaiser squealed happily and was on Anastasia instantly, licking at her face and whimpering. Anastasia just pushed him away and told him to sit. She needed to catch her breath and calm down, and she couldn’t do that with him all over him. The small blonde girl looked up and nodded at her savior. “Th-th-thank y-you,” she murmured.

"Hold on!" Thank God for Karate, otherwise she wouldn't have had the strength necessary to pull her from the waters. The fight or flight instinct kicked in, and she started to roughly pull her towards the shore, her hiking boots gripping the damp soil. "You're alright! You're almost there!" Hand over hand movements along the strong piece of wood, and she was soon on shore with her pet hyena smothering her in relieved kisses. The entire ordeal only lasted less than a minute, but felt like it endured for hours. Ginny's hands were covered in scratches, even a few cuts from the rough vegetation; but she immediately pocketed her hands to hide that. The woman's injuries were far more important than her own.
"No problem. You doing alright? It's kinda cold out here and you need to get to shelter fast or you'll catch a cold." The red head cautiously side glanced at the hyena, "Uhm...he won't do anything to me, right? I heard stories about what they are capable of." Not that she doubted Anastasia's capability of controlling the animal...she just didn't trust it.
"I have a phone. You need me to call someone?"

It's kinda cold out here and you need to get to shelter fast or you'll catch a cold,” the woman commented. Anastasia nodded her head and took a few deep breaths before she got enough lung capacity to form coherent words. “I—I’ll be alright. Strong immune system,” she muttered, trembling like a leaf. She looked back out over the river that had nearly swallowed and killed her and shuddered. Kaiser whimpered and rubbed against her, and Anastasia patted the top of his head before she pulled herself to feet, standing at an intimidating five feet. “He won’t hurt you. . . he just gets a little excited,” Anastasia said, still speaking quietly yet loud enough for the other woman to hear her speaking. Kaiser whimpered quietly and sat back on his haunches, head tilted and pink tongue hanging from his mouth. He looked every bit as harmless as Anastasia said he was, but if she gave him the word he would tear out a person’s throat for her. At the mention of a phone, Anastasia shook her head. “I don’t have anyone to call. I live a couple miles over there, so I’m not too lost. . . . My name is Anastasia.”

"Wish mine was as strong then I wouldn't get sick so much." For years, the red head had a strong immune system herself, until she started catching all sorts of things from bronchitis to the common cold. Damned illnesses. "He won't? Alright..." That wasn't enough to convince Ginny that he was fully tame. Exotic pet animals have been known to be the death of numerous humans all because of their blissful ignorance to their true nature. There's just...no way in hell the hyena could possibly be a pet. Wait, was that thing acting like a dog?
Ginny blinked incredulously at the spotted hyena's abnormal behavior, and found herself slowly looking back at Anastasia to get that bizarre image out of her head. First vampires, bizarre were-creatures and now tame hyenas? What's next?! "Oh. Really? Here I thought this place was just barren of homes!" So much for continuing writing her little story. "I can escort you over there if you want. Here." Ginny took off her brown coat and held it out to her, "I'm used to much colder weather than this, so, I can manage without a coat for at least a few hours before I feel the chill."

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Anastasia followed the other girl’s gaze to her pet. Concern fell across her own face and Anastasia looked up at Ginny a little worriedly. It was true that Kaiser wasn’t exactly being very hyena-like, but they shared similarities with dogs even if they weren’t of the canine family. She started to fidget slightly, wondering if the hyena was making this girl nervous at all. From what Anastasia could tell she was human, so she probably didn’t realize that Anastasia herself was a hyena. A matriarchal animal, Anastasia was in charge of this male hyena. In fact, most of the pack that ran at the mansion was male. Well, all of it. If there was another female, Anastasia most likely wouldn’t be able to control it as well as the males. If only it had worked on Daktari. . . then maybe she wouldn’t have had to endure all of his shit. “Ah. . . you really don’t have to worry. . . . I can control him pretty well. I know. . . that wild animals as pets are dangerous. . . but please believe me. . . so long as he doesn’t feel threatened and I tell him it’s okay, he won’t do anything to you or me,” Anastasia said with a small smile. If she knew what this human knew about the creatures living in the world she could have elaborated further.
“Oh. Really? Here I thought this place was just barren of homes!” Anastasia smiled slightly and rubbed her shoulder. She hadn’t gotten a name out of her even after announcing her own. Ah well. If the girl didn’t want to tell her her name, then she didn’t have to. “It’s, ah. . . quite a ways up there. . . we’ll have to cross this river,” Anastasia said, not sounding at all happy to announce this. She swallowed hard. “And it’s the only residence in the area for quite a ways, I think. It’s. . . not supposed to be where people can find it easily. I wouldn’t mind. . . some company though. Kaiser isn’t much of a conversationalist.” Smiling, Anastasia snapped her fingers and Kaiser was up on his paws and by her side, a quiet little cackle escaping his throat. It was an eerie sound indeed and Anastasia could see why people found them a little strange. Ginny suddenly pulled her jacket off and handed it to Anastasia, who looked up at her new companion with a bit of confusion. “Oh. . . I don’t want to. . . it’ll get wet. . . alright,” Anastasia sighed, removing her sopping winter coat and replacing it with Ginny’s dry one. She held on to her jacket, letting it hang by her side, then looked at the river. “Do you. . . know a way across?”

"Oh, and, name's Ginny," she said with an apologetic smile, "I need to stop forgoing my manners." After having taken her wet coat by the hand, Ginny immediately began scanning around for a way to get across the river. Since Anastasia had the hyena well under control, for now, then there was no need to worry about the animal pouncing on her. Still, those massive jaws made her inch away. "I don't see any-ahah!" The red head triumphantly, if not comically, pointed towards a fallen tree a ways downstream and gestured for her to follow, "This way. We'll be back at your house in no time! Though, the surface may be slick, so you'll have to be very careful."
A thought struck Ginny during the trek downhill to the natural bridge: Anastasia didn't know how to swim. The way she clung to her exotic pet and how she screamed at the sight of the raging waters was proof enough of that assumption. For her sake, she needed to start learning. Now at the crossing point, Ginny stretched out her hand to the blond and gingerly walked across whilst helping her keep her balance, "It's not too bad since the bark is a little on the rough side, but be careful. There could be patches of moss."
Moss would spell disaster considering how slick it tends to be.

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← A tad startled by Ginny’s outburst—though when wasn’t Anastasia startled by something at one point in time?—Anastasia jumped slightly and exhaled sharply. For a were-creature, she sure didn’t act like one. Unless she was a were-mouse. That part she would play easily. The outburst of course was to alert Anastasia that she had discovered a way across the river. Anastasia followed her gesture and saw a large log strewn across the gap between banks. Furrowing her brow skeptically, she looked up at Ginny, but the red-head was already making her way down the slope and toward the log. “Ah—Okay. It’s nice to meet you, Ginny,” Anastasia replied with a smile, carefully making her way down the slope, Kaiser following after her. Anastasia looked over at her pet and gave him a short command in Russian and the hyena bolted past Ginny and across the log, safely to the other side where he stood and waited for the two girls. Ginny waited for Anastasia, who hopped the last little steps to the log, not wanting to keep her new companion waiting. “It's not too bad since the bark is a little on the rough side, but be careful. There could be patches of moss,” Ginny warned, reaching for Anastasia. The small blonde girl took her outstretched hand and she slowly made her way to the log, trembling slightly at the site of the rushing water roiling just under her feet. Her free arm was out for balance, and she kept her eyes on the log, making sure that she didn’t step on any of this moss of doom Ginny had mentioned. There was a close call and her foot started to slip when she miss-stepped, but Anastasia managed to quickly reposition her foot before she took a tumble into the water and pulled Ginny in with her. God that would have just sucked. However, the two girls made it safely across the log and to dry land. Anastasia fell to her knees and sat there for a moment, thanking god that they didn’t live on a world of water, and then she stood up and tried to act natural despite the blush that had spread on her cheeks.
“Ah, thank you. . . . I don’t much. . . like water,” Anastasia admitted, even though it should have been apparent by now. Assuming Ginny wasn’t that observant, but so far she seemed to be a lot more observant than Anastasia. Kaiser walked slowly up to the two girls and looked up at them expectantly, and Anastasia smiled at him and said “Home,” in a quiet voice. Kaiser turned and immediately headed back in the direction they had come. Anastasia didn’t have the best sense of direction, and out here everything looked the same. Kaiser, however, would be able to find the mansion in no time. “This way, then,” Anastasia said, following her little hyena pet and leading Ginny at the same time. “What are you doing out here? I didn’t think many people came out here. It’s ah. . . normally not very safe. Though. . . it is the middle of the day. . . .” Anastasia blushed slightly again as she realized she had just rambled mildly about nothing. But walking in silence was terribly awkward.

"I kinda figured as much," replied Ginny, "with the way you were panicking in the water and how cautiously you crossed the log, I knew you had it. I'm not sure what the name for it is. Probably Hydrophobia." While she loved the water, Ginny hadn't been swimming as much as she used to. Anastasia, one of these days, did have to learn how to overcome her fear of water and probably enjoy it at the same time.
"Huh? Oh..." Ginny bit down on her lower lip and looked at the pack sitting on her back, "Well, I was out here getting inspiration for a book I'm wri-AH!" She was abruptly cut off when her foot landed on an area with soft, slippery soil and nearly lost her balance in the process. Had it not been for the branch just within her reach, Ginny would have had the wind knocked out of her. "Ahem. Anyways," releasing the branch, she brushed dirt and vegetation from her attire, "as I was saying before Mother Nature took her course, I'm working on a book and the scenery here is perfect for what I need."
"And if it's dangerous, then I'll be careful-nothing to it. I'm aware of some of the creatures that roam these parts." Of course, she was referring to the vampire and the were-creature. However, Anastasia looked like any normal human to her...

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← Ginny seemed to trip on something and nearly fall over, and Anastasia lifted her hands as if to catch her, but the human caught herself. Anastasia probably would have been able to right her despite how small she was, mostly because she wasn’t human anymore. As a human, she probably would have just fallen over as well. Anastasia didn’t let her arms fall from her sides until Ginny seemed to have her balance back, and then she listened to what Ginny was doing out there in the forest. Writing? “Really? Well that is really neat. I don’t have any fun hobbies like that. . . ,” Anastasia trailed off, looking at the ground. She often looked at herself as useless and a burden to everyone around her. Already she’d had to be saved. What would have happened had Ginny not been there? She would have sat there on the bank soaking in frozen river water and probably die of hypothermia if she didn’t lose strength and drown first. Kaiser might have been able to pull her up on the shore, but who could know? When she wasn’t finding ways to entertain herself—like taking a walk—then she was moping around the mansion.
“And if it's dangerous, then I'll be careful—nothing to it. I'm aware of some of the creatures that roam these parts,” Ginny commented confidently. Anastasia looked around, wondering if these creatures were going to jump out. “You mean like the rare spotted hyena?” Anastasia asked lightly, smiling at her little pet. Kaiser looked over his shoulder at the pair, giving Anastasia a look that said something like “you’re not funny.” Anastasia just smiled at him and he turned back to the path, trotting along. Anastasia of course thought the girl was just talking about the bears or cougars that might have roamed the area. “I’ve also heard deer can be rather mean,” Anastasia continued, smiling brightly. She was trying to be funny and lighten the mood a little bit. However, after what seemed to be a long walk, the trees started to thin out and the large mansion started to become visible. It was far too big to be the house of one person, but there were several vampires living inside, and Urjasz the werewolf showed up every now and again to check on Anastasia. He’d been uncharacteristically accommodating to her since Kyla had died. “Well, this is the place. . . .”

"Uhm," Ginny tossed the hyena another stare, "well, no, but I won't start talking about what I know walks around here." People found her to be crazy to believe that vampires and werewolves existed, even though she had the proof of an attack in the form of a scar on her neck. Her right hand absent-mindedly pressed against the punctures tentatively, as if though expecting that horrible pain to return. Those who thought the bite of a vampire was a turn on didn't know shit about the species. When her blood flowed from her veins, Ginny felt her entire being bleeding out-mind, soul, life. She got out alive at least. Barely.
"Actually, deer can be aggressive at times, but it's rare. Don't bother the males during mating season, or they may just attack you." Ginny chuckled and slid her hand from the scar. "Woa...! That's your place? It's HUGE!" The red head blinked at it in shock, looked at Anastasia and looked at it again. How the hell did a mansion go unnoticed out here? Wait, wasn't it near a street somewhere? Just goes to show how observant she was.
"It's beautiful."

ANASTASIA KIRILOVNA MARISOVA → IT'S HARD TO SEE THE PAIN BEHIND THE MASK BEARING THE BURDENSHE STANDS HARD AS A STONE IN A WORLD THAT SHE CAN'T RISE ABOVE ← “Well, no, but I won't start talking about what I know walks around here,” Ginny muttered. Anastasia tilted her head to the side and gave Ginny a long look. What could she mean? She opened her mouth to ask, but didn’t feel like being rude. If she didn’t want to talk about it, then she didn’t have to. However, she was rather curious. Did this girl know about vampires and the like? But if she did. . . what would she think about Anastasia being a were-hyena? Would she eventually catch on to this because a hyena was following the girl around? If she didn’t, she would definitely figure it out if she saw the pack of hyenas she had with her. . . . Unless she wasn’t good at putting two and two together, which Anastasia didn’t really know or could tell at this point in time. . . . But the little girl was a little more worried about how Ginny would react. . . would she be scared? Maybe she was a hunter and would try to kill her. . . . No, that was a stupid idea. The girl didn’t even look armed. Not that it would be hard to kill Anastasia with a heavy object found in the mansion, or even a rock on the ground. . . . She wasn’t much for self-defense.
Oh just ask her. You want to know! Besides, if you want a human for a friend they’ll have to find out eventually or risk getting eaten by you when you shift! the voice explained. It had been silent enough up until then. It might have been a little strange, Anastasia hearing this little voice in the back of her head, but she just figured it was her inner subconscious, telling her things that she already knew to be true but didn’t want to think about. She did want to know, but she was too afraid of rejection to mention anything. She would have to work up the courage to ask, but before she could, the human was commenting about her home. The mansion. Right. . . it probably hadn’t been what the woman was expecting, had it? “It's beautiful,” Ginny commented. Anastasia smiled at her and led her to a little path. Kaiser ran ahead now that he knew the pair would be able to find their way back on their own. He wanted to get back to the pack. In the distance, you could hear them cackling and squealing as they played. “Thanks. I inherited it,” she replied vaguely, her smile fading as she thought about Zakhar. . . . She still couldn’t get the image of him burning alive out of her head.
“You can come in for a while if you want. We have plenty of food and stuff to drink if you’re hungry. I wouldn’t mind an extra bit of company for a little bit,” Anastasia asked, trying to be a good hostess. Hopefully the vampires wouldn’t bother them too much. . . ever since Urjasz had gotten back from Russia to find that Kyla had been killed, he had made sure that some Novosi were at the mansion at all times like they had been before. He thought she would feel safer, and she really did. She was almost certain that they wouldn’t bother her. . . it was still day-time after all. They were probably in their rooms resting. One or two might come out when Anastasia got home to see if she needed anything, but she was a fairly self-dependent girl sometimes. She at least knew how to get herself something to drink, work the TV, and raid the fridge. It was only a short walk to the mansion, and she stopped at the gate to see what Ginny had to say about going inside.

Were hyenas "laughing" in the distance? That same curious, comical expression returned; and she squinted her eyes at the mansion, trying to figure out why the hell this girl would allow hyenas to roam around freely on her property. Already, she could see her being hosted on "Deadly Attraction", a new show on Animal Planet, with her having been tragically devoured by her pets. The mere thought of having a hyena's jaws clamping down on her arm wasn't pleasant.
"You inherited this place? Seriously? Wow!" She forgot about those images for now. "It's beautiful!" The red head hadn't stepped inside a mansion before, so, she was eager to see what it was like since Anastasia opened her doors to her. "I'd love to!" Just as long as no hyenas scamper around to take a chomp into her leg. Oh, great, those horrible images had returned with a vengeance with her being the victim. Eeek! But she couldn't turn down the hospitality.
