M al was lost. Not hopelessly, just lost enough so that he didn't know where he was or how to get anywhere he knew. Admittedly, most people would call that hopelessly lost, but Mal was not most people. He never had been. Unlike most people, Mal was over six feet tall, and unlike most, he almost never spent much time staying in one place. He traveled around, walking from place to place. He didn't bother with cars much, because he couldn't really stand the smell, that mixture of rubber and gasoline. It was why he usually avoided cities, for they absolutely reeked of the infernal stuff. No, unlike most people, Mal preferred walking places. The only time he would change his mind was using ships to cross the oceans. The sea air would usually cover up any possible smell from the engines of the ship. He paused, looking around. Some street, normal black pavement, trees lining either side, some state forest or another that he had happened to find a road through. The scent of civilization was very faint here, the only traces coming from the asphalt of the road itself. He ignored that, focusing on the sight and scent of nature all around him. There was a family of deer, about a hundred yards off the road. He glanced in the direction he knew it would be, but the trees were gathered too close together to see anything in that direction. Still, he stopped walking. He knew they were there, and there was hunger beginning to gnaw at his stomach. Deer weren't exactly the best tasting meat, but they would quench the hunger for a short time. In the end, he decided against it. The family had just brought a new member into the world, and it was too weak to survive without it's parents. Some might call it sentimentality, but Mal was simply the kind to live and let live. " Now...where the hell am I?" He wondered out loud, not expecting anyone to answer... Tags: Raquelle(Ana) Notes: Okay, I just chose Raquelle randomly out of the two, so this is for her Location: Somewhere nonspecific... RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → LEADING DOWN INTO MY CORE WHERE I'VE BECOME SO NUMB WITHOUT A SOULMY SPIRIT SLEEPING SOMEWHERE COLD UNTIL YOU FIND IT THERE AND LEAD ME BACK HOME ← Okay this was just insane. One minute the poor, oblivious were-raccoon was walking in a small suburb of New York, and now she was in this forest, all turned around and overwhelmed with the scent of pine trees and dirt. She didn’t remember a time she had smelled a forest so clearly, but then again she couldn’t remember a time she had even been in a forest. As far as she knew, this was how it always smelled.
But that didn’t stop her from being any less lost. Her dark-haired head moved back and forth as she tried to pick one tree out from another, but of course they all looked exactly the same. . . . Like trees. She sighed in frustration and tears of fear came to her eyes. How long had she been in New York? Already she’d gotten lost like seven times, no matter which part of New York she had been in. Was she even in New York now? Her hands came to her head and she gripped a handful of her hair, but she didn’t pull on it. Wiping the tears from her eyes, she stumbled on.
A few minutes of discombobulated wandering brought her to a path and she almost started to cry in relief before she gathered herself. “Oh, thank you. . . thank you whoever is looking out for me!” she whispered, looking past the canopy into the sky. If there was a god, maybe they were smiling on her now. Pushing onward, she brushed a bug off of her arm and squirmed with disgust, patting herself down as if she thought there were more on her. God how she hated the wilderness! At least with her “masters” she had been somewhere clean and bug-free. . . . Shaking her head, Raquelle scolded herself mentally for thinking like that. Anything was better than being constantly bought and sold.
Just as she had imagined, she spotted someone up ahead a little ways. Hope flared in her chest. She knew the path would have people on it! Jogging a little ways ahead, she hoped to god that this person would know where to go to get out of the forest. However, several seconds before she reached the man—now she could definitely tell that it was in fact a guy—she heard him ask himself where she was. Her hope died instantly and she slowed down, scuffling her feet. “I was hoping you could tell me that,” she muttered quietly, unaware that the man would be able to hear her.

----------------------------------------- At the sound of the voice, Mal spun around, his bare feet turning in the dust. He was startled, but not extremely shocked. For some reason, he hadn't smelled the young woman coming up to him. Maybe it was because he was so engrossed in the forest. Again, his love of nature had made him a little less observant, but he couldn't hate it because of that. He simply had to make do with what he had. What was that anyway? He had an apparently lost girl, extremely timid sounding, with a voice that sounded like it had to come through a mile of steel to get to him. God, that was quiet. Any normal human would most likely not have been able to hear her at all, and it was only what he affectionately dubbed his "wolfy senses" that had allowed him to hear the words in the first place. Which took him back to stage one. Where were they? He knew he wasn't that far from the outskirts of the city, but for the life of him, he couldn't tell in which direction. Still, they were on some sort of path, and any path had to lead somewhere. Logic dictated that the larger the place, the more likely the path would end up there. If you followed that logic, following the path would bring you back to the city. There was one problem, though. Which way, exactly, should you follow the path? Not only that, but he faintly remembered some forks in the path from earlier that day. If that were true as well, it would be quite a hassle to get back to the city directly. "I wouldn't worry too much, lass." He said softly, smiling in his best attempt to look friendly. He wasn't quite sure how it looked, but it had worked before on other...people. "We're not that far from the city, so I'm sure that if we...start walking, we'll get home soon enough" He neglected to mention the fact that he didn't particularly like cities to begin with. It didn't really matter. This girl was as lost as he was, but she actually had a home to go back to. That was all the reason he needed. "In case you're wondering, I'm Malcolm Blacknest, at your service." He bowed slightly. "Most people call me Mal, however. Ignore the conventional Latin meaning, I assure you that I do not live up to it."

RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → LEADING DOWN INTO MY CORE WHERE I'VE BECOME SO NUMB WITHOUT A SOULMY SPIRIT SLEEPING SOMEWHERE COLD UNTIL YOU FIND IT THERE AND LEAD ME BACK HOME ← Raquelle started when the man spun around, but she managed to keep from gasping. Instead, she stepped backwards a bit, but he just seemed a little surprised to see her there. Sighing, the small woman placed her hand over her chest as if to keep her heart from bursting out of her chest. For a moment she had thought the man was going to attack her or something for coming out of nowhere like that. Of course, she hadn’t intended on sneaking up on him like that. She was surprised he hadn’t noticed her coming in fact. Raquelle smiled reassuringly and kept her space to make sure that he wasn’t going to lunge at her.
However, her fears were snuffed out by his own reassuring smile and she took a step closer to him so they wouldn’t have to speak too loudly at each other. Unfortunately, Raquelle wasn’t aware of vampires or werewolves despite the fact that she was a were-creature herself. In fact, she wasn’t even aware of that quite yet. She was a little unnerved that he had been able to hear her speak, but she just figured that she had spoken louder than she thought, or perhaps sound carried a little further in the forest. The man told her that they weren’t too far from the city, and Raquelle felt happy for a moment. She wouldn’t have to be lost much longer!
But what joy she felt was thrown when he told her that they’d be home soon. Raquelle’s face fell and she looked down at the ground, wrapping her arms around her chest. “Home, right. . . ,” she muttered enigmatically, looking horribly miserable. She hadn’t had a true home for years, and now she was on the other side of the continent—literally—from where her only home was. The poor girl wasn’t just lost, she was homeless and she didn’t think she could ever really return to the home she did have. Were her parents still there? They had to think that she was dead. . . . She had been missing for a year. If only she knew their number. . . .
The man introduced himself and Raquelle looked up from the ground and smiled at him, glad to have something else to think about than the home that she might not be able to return to. “I wouldn’t know what the meaning is, sir,” she replied respectfully. “but my name’s Raquelle Atwell. . . . I don’t really have a nickname. It’s very nice to meet you, though, sir. I’d be grateful if you could lead me to the town. . . . I don’t want to be in the forest when dark falls. . . ,” she continued, glancing around as if she thought a big bear was going to crash through the forest and try to eat her at any moment.

----------------------------------------- Mal froze when he noticed her reaction to the word "home", and mentally slapped himself. Not that he could have known in any way, but he always felt a little of it himself when someone else was unhappy. He wasn't empathetic, exactly, but he was very good at reading other people's body language. What her body language had amounted to was a declaration of denial. She either didn't have a home, or was never planning to go back. The instant he noticed this, some slight fear entered his body. Fear of nothing else but the chance that something had happened to this girl. Now cautiously curious, he surreptitiously drew in a deep breath through his nose, sifting through the various scents that assaulted his nose, singling her out in the mess. There was something...odd about her. It wasn't her age, no. She looked young and smelled young. But he still had that strange feeling that she wasn't really human.
And yet, for the life of him, he couldn't tell what she was. Whatever she had become, she had been human, and not very long ago, either. Her body still carried the scents and the very slightly clumsy movements from her past life, whatever that had been. The more Mal realized this, the more he began to wonder if she knew at all. He had met a person before, a were who did not know it, turned unknowingly by an odd man they had brought willingly to bed. A hunter, a predator, who had feasted a tiny bit on her while in the act, essentially turning her. He still remembered her, pale and with a small bit of bandage around her neck where she had been bitten. He also knew what had eventually happened to her, though he tried to forget. When she had learned of the turning, she had run away, and a week or so later, there was a story in the paper about a suicide. Mal did not want that to happen to this girl. He didn't think she was ready to learn what she was just yet.
While all of these thoughts ran rampant through his head, he barely caught what she said afterwards. "It means "bad"" he said, shrugging. It was a fitting name, in some ways. Not that he was a bad person, but the other half of him, the wolf that roamed beneath his skin, was also a part of him, and that made him bad enough to deserve the name. Especially when the hunger was upon him, and he had to feed.
He stopped when he heard her mention dark falling. He didn't mind the dark, for it was as bright as day to his eyes, and much more peaceful. Thinking about it, he glanced once at the sun, only to find it already halfway buried in the trees above them, the sky beginning to turn the dark red-orange of dusk. They didn't have much time until dark, and he was pretty sure that they wouldn't make it back to any sort of civilization before dark fell. She seemed afraid of the dark, at least out here in the forest. Mal was positive that nothing truly bad could happen to them in a dark forest, but he didn't think he would be able to convince the young woman of it.
"Okay, Let's see if we can get out of here, then. . ." he said softly, glancing from side to side on the path, trying to remember which one he had come from. "You. . .uh, you wouldn't know which way you came from, would you? I'm generally good with directions, but. . .it's been a long day, and. . ." He colored slightly, somewhat ill-at-ease with the knowledge that he actually had no idea which direction to go...especially when this young woman seemed so afraid.

RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → SHE CALLS OUT TO THE MAN ON THE STREET HE PRETENDS HE CAN'T HEAR HEROH THINK TWICE CAUSE IT'S ANOTHER DAY FOR YOU AND ME IN PARADISE OH THINK TWICE ← This man seemed nice enough. Raquelle didn’t miss him seem to catch her reaction and she almost apologized, but she stopped herself. What did she have to apologize for? Not having a home? Making him uncomfortable? She didn’t know he was uncomfortable for sure. He might have just felt bad for her, and there was no point in apologizing for that, was it? She didn’t really mind the pity, either. It made her feel like someone out there was capable of caring for her, capable of seeing that she was in pain. Not a single person she had come in contact with for the past year gave a rat’s ass about her except for when she wasn’t doing something she was supposed to be doing, no matter how much she didn’t want to do it.
Raquelle shook her head and brushed her hair away from her face with her fingers. No time to be thinking about those days. She had gotten away—though she wasn’t really sure how she had managed to do that—and that was all that mattered. All she had to was repress the memories now, keep them from flooding back to her and driving her insane. She had been able to ignore the memories when she was under the needle, but sober. . . sober she couldn’t stop them from haunting her dreams when she found somewhere to sleep. She couldn’t stop them from making her cry out whenever she saw anything remotely close to the places she was kept, the bed she was tied to, or a man that looked like someone who had used and abused her. No one had looked as kind as this man acted, and she was able to smile at him, unconsciously turning on the charm to get in his good graces.
Smiling sheepishly, she shrugged her shoulders. Mal might have meant bad, but he didn’t seem bad. Names were just names. She didn’t know what Raquelle meant in what language, but she was sure that it probably didn’t have anything to do with her personality or what she was about. “It’s just a name,” she replied, hoping that this man—Malcolm—wouldn’t worry that she was going to be scared of him for such a silly reason. It was a nickname at that, and it made sense. What else were you supposed to call someone named Malcolm? Mal was the only logical short form. Surely that wasn’t a good enough reason to be nervous around a person. The fact that he had brought it up at all made Raquelle wonder if it happened a lot more than she assumed.
A look of thought crossed the small girl as she turned to glance around. Where had she come from. . . . Lifting her arm, she pointed down the path. “I followed the path from that direction before I found you. . . . And I think I found the path while coming from this direction,” she said distractedly, turning her hips to point in a different direction. “Apart from that I’ve been wondering around since high noon I think. . . . I don’t really have anything to tell the time.” Raquelle turned back to him and looked down, rueful. “I’m sorry I can’t be more help,” she apologized quickly. “I think. . . I think that so long as we head downhill we’ll come to the beginning to the path? Unless it’s a really hilly place.”

----------------------------------------- He smiled a little. Sure, Mal was just a name, but she didn't know what he was or how he lived. Still, one could easily forgive one so young their innocence for a time. Especially one so recently still mortal. He highly doubted now that she knew what she was, so freshly turned, as well. He thought, though he might be wrong, that it had been little more than a year, if that, hardly enough time for anyone to truly accept or understand a new life such as this one. The life of an immortal was hardly easy to accept at times, leaving all the friends and family you had behind. Now that he thought about it though, with the way she had acted when he mentioned home, he did not think she had a family, at least not one she could easily go back to. So, what exactly was she going to do once they reached civilization? A girl like her, all alone, was unlikely to get far, especially if she was always this unassuming. Many other "monsters" like him would have not hesitated to take advantage of such a person.
As he saw it, she was at least fortunate that she had run into him, someone willing to help. After all, he at nothing really better to do with his time. If he hadn't met her, he would have just kept walking and not done anything truly interesting, so this was at least a welcome break from a tiresome life, and maybe he could help her along the way, something that would make his mother proud. If she was still alive, anyways...
As she talked, he followed her pointing hand. Then he realized something. Unless it was a really hilly place? Sighing, he realized that it wouldn't be much use. New York had probably the most hills he'd seen for a while, flowing up and down on into the horizon as you looked at them. Heading downhill would always get you to the center of a valley, but then you would need to head up hill to get out the other side. Not only that, but on the top of a hill, anywhere could be downhill.
Well, at least it was a little bit of help, if not enough to truly help him get his bearings. So, she had come from that way...after taking a fork at some point along the road. He sighed, looking at the sun. "I'm sorry to say this, Raquelle, but, uh, I highly doubt that we'll get anywhere before the sun sets. But at least we have a direction now, right? Don't worry about the dark. There's nothing here that can harm you. He didn't mention anything about the fact that he could be considered harmful at certain times, such as when the hunger took over. At almost every time though, he would be able to control it, and it was barely a slight annoyance right now, still weeks from being in full swing. But that meant nothing if he couldn't get this girl out of the woods. Even as he watched, the sun dipped below the horizon, long shadows falling across the path. -----------------------------------------

RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → LEADING DOWN INTO MY CORE WHERE I'VE BECOME SO NUMB WITHOUT A SOULMY SPIRIT SLEEPING SOMEWHERE COLD UNTIL YOU FIND IT THERE AND LEAD ME BACK HOME ← Raquelle’s face fell and she looked down. She would have liked to get out of the forest before it got dark. She preferred being in the city when she slept, or when it was dark. She wasn’t afraid of the dark by any means. In fact, recently she found that it was easier for her to see in the dark, and she figured that it was just from spending so much time locked up in dark rooms and she had just gotten used to it now. However, just because she could see in the dark didn’t mean that she could fight off the things that roamed the forest at night. Cougars weren’t afraid to get little girls! Bears definitely weren’t afraid to get anything if they felt threatened. . . . And who knew what else might be lurking in the forest.
But everything was going to be a bit okay now. Raquelle lifted her head and tried her best to smile at the man. “Well. . . that’s okay I guess. I’m not here by myself now. . . at least,” she said optimistically. Two heads were better than one, and this guy made her feel at least semi-safe. He had a friendly face and seemed ready enough to help her. The last guy who had tried to help her and just been so scary-looking! Raquelle wasn’t even sure if he was really human, but she didn’t know what else he could be. But he’d given her the creeps and she’d left when she could. At least he’d given her a bit of money, but she didn’t want to waste it all on a place to stay, so she’d kept what she could for food and new clothes. They were more important than a warm bed—clothes mainly because the ones she had wore out so quickly.
Sighing, Raquelle looked down the path. How long did they have to go? Would they just keep walking until they reached the end of the hiking path or a town? Would they have to stay out here tonight? She shuddered at the thought. “Well. . . um. . . I guess we better start walking then,” she suggested mildly, hoping that the man didn’t think she was being too demanding by her request. Raquelle thought getting as far as they could get before she got too tired to walk be good a thing. She had already walked all the way out here and she was exhausted and needed some water, and her stomach was starting to twist painfully. It hadn’t started to growl yet, so she figured she’d be set for a few hours.

----------------------------------------- Mal smiled softly, the newly risen moon setting his eyes aglow. For a second, it gave him almost a feral look, but then he shook himself and it went away. It was an odd feeling, this uncertainty. He couldn't really remember feeling this lost before. Still, now they had a feeling for the right direction, so at least that was a plus. Looking at the path, Mal took a step before turning back and gesturing at the girl. "Well, I suppose we'd best be on our way then, Raquelle. The sooner the better, right?"
He waited for her to start walking, but suddenly a thought struck him. What would happen to her when they did get back to civilization? She obviously didn't have any place to go, so what was he going to do with her? With her current dilemma, he felt extremely uneasy with just leaving her behind, so he felt a strong obligation to watch over her, until she was ready to accept what she was. Before that, however, he had to find a way to break it to her, a way that wouldn't completely make her dread the thought. Perhaps he could figure out something on the walk. After all, she still had time before the full moon struck, and by then it would be far too late...
His thoughts were interrupted suddenly by a deep howl somewhere else in the forest, breaking his stride and making him stare off into the trees. After a second, a multitude of other howls joined in. He stopped completely, staring off into the forest, his eyes narrowed. This was not something he needed tonight. He was pretty sure that the girl was already enough on edge without all this sound to add to the bargain... -----------------------------------------

RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → LEADING DOWN INTO MY CORE WHERE I'VE BECOME SO NUMB WITHOUT A SOULMY SPIRIT SLEEPING SOMEWHERE COLD UNTIL YOU FIND IT THERE AND LEAD ME BACK HOME ← Raquelle nodded and smiled up at the man, letting her arms fall to her sides before she started to follow after the man, walking by his side but a step behind. The young lady looked around nervously, hoping to whatever deity was out there that there wasn’t anything that would come out and try to eat her. At least there was someone else with her to lessen the creepiness. In fact, Raquelle couldn’t even remember why she had come this far into the forest in the first place. She must not have been paying attention and had gotten lost before she even knew she wasn’t in the same spot anymore.
The forest was getting darker and darker and Raquelle unconsciously moved closer and closer to Mal, trying to make sure that she wasn’t too far away and she wouldn’t get dragged off by a bear or a cougar or something. The thought made her shudder and she rubbed her bare arms. Oh how she wished she had bought a jacket! Of course, she didn’t know it wasn’t the air that was making her cold, just the fear that rose up her spine.
In the distance, a wolf howled. Raquelle stopped when Mal did and she made a little “eep” sound once the others started to join in. She looked around furiously and ended up attached to Mal’s arm, squeezing it tightly. “What was that? Wolves? Coyotes? They’re afraid of people, aren’t they?” she asked, her voice wavering. Oh she didn’t want to get eaten out here in the dark! She looked around and swallowed hard before looking up at Mal. “What are we going to do if we can’t find civilization?”

----------------------------------------- Mal scowled for a second, glaring off in the direction of the howls. It didn't help that the sun had now disappeared, and the only shadows cast were the shadows of the trees from the moon, which stretched out over the road, the leaves rustling in the wind. Every now and then, a movement would catch his eye, making him glance at it offhand, but it was just a trick of the moving shadows. Well, this pretty much took the cake. The were lost, in the night, in a forest that he had no idea how to get out of. And the erie howls echoing off the surrounding hills really did not aid the situation in any way.
Feeling the girl clutch his arm, he bent down, trying his best to smile in what he hoped would be a reassuring way. "Wolves aren't the most predictable creatures, Raquelle, but I can promise you one thing...if they aren't afraid of most people, they will be afraid of me..." His face took on a grim expression for a second before he forcefully softened it. She didn't need to know exactly what he meant, but it was the truth. Normal wolves tended to stray far out of his path if they ever caught his scent. It was a male dominance thing, he supposed, but he wasn't sure.
Standing up again, he took a short breath to scent the air, trying once again to get even a small trace of the scent of civilization. To no avail, for the scent of nature, surrounded him so much that he could get no hint of it at all. "And don't worry about finding civilization. All roads lead somewhere, right?"

RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → LEADING DOWN INTO MY CORE WHERE I'VE BECOME SO NUMB WITHOUT A SOULMY SPIRIT SLEEPING SOMEWHERE COLD UNTIL YOU FIND IT THERE AND LEAD ME BACK HOME ← Tearing her eyes away fro the blackness of the forest, she met Mal's look and her beating heart stilled, starting to beat a little slower now. She couldn't help but be reassured by his smile and she looked around again, trying to pierce the darkness of the forest, but there wasn't a whole lot she could see. . . . Trees, bushes, leaves, sticks. . . . None of it was very dangerous, right?
Raquelle nodded her head, but seemed a little off-put by his statement about how the wolves would be scared of him. Her brow furrowed inquisitively and she tilted her head to the side, not letting go of his arm--and she didn't really plan to, either. He was her life-line right now and she wasn't going to let him go for anything! Well, not until she knew for sure that he wasn't going to get separated from her or she wasn't going to be grabbed and then dragged off somewhere to be eaten or worse.
Well. There probably wasn't anything worse than being eaten. . . at least, she didn't think there would be.
"What do you mean? Do you have some sort of repellent? I heard there's such a thing as bear repellent so I guess there would be some for other animals. . . ," she commented, probably speaking the most since she'd met Mal. Talking helped her get over her nerves and take her mind off of everything else that was going on. . . like walking through the woods. In the dark. With wolves nearby. . . . She shuddered at the thought of having one come at her. . . teeth bared. . .
Raquelle shook her head and pulled herself out of her imagination in time to hear Mal tell her not to worry. She nodded her head and looked up at him with a smile as they continued their walk. At least she wasn't out here alone anymore.

-----------------------------------------
Mal shook his head, muttering "Not Quite..." under his breath. And it was right, he didn't have any fabricated repellant that would frighten off inquisitive wolves. No, what he had was completely natural. To them, he smelled like an Alpha, one of the older, stronger wolves that led the pack. Fortunately, the various packs tended to stay away from one another, so the pack in the distance would hopefully smell him and remain at a distance, simply watching to make sure that he actually left the area. Hopefully... There were also the ones that didn't like intruders into their territory, but he sincerely hoped that this pack wasn't large enough to be aggressive.
Then she smiled, and he found himself smiling back almost unconsciously, sharing the feeling of relative comfort that she had. Then again, she still hadn't let go of his arm, so she must have felt still a little uncomfortable. Reaching down, he took her hand, squeezing it lightly. Hopefully they would be able to make it back to the city before anything bad happened. It was too late for night not to fall, but hopefully, they wouldn't get back at some ungodly hour of the night. The term almost made him laugh, for he knew that he didn't believe in god. The term had simply worked its way into his speech patterns after so long living with mortals.
Squeezing the hand again, he looked down at her, smiling. "Come on, let's go, alright? After all, what's the worst that could happen?" No sooner had he spoken than a large raindrop hit him on the forehead. Well, shit.....

RAQUELLE ELLANA ATWELL → SHE CALLS OUT TO THE MAN ON THE STREET HE PRETENDS HE CAN'T HEAR HEROH THINK TWICE CAUSE IT'S ANOTHER DAY FOR YOU AND ME IN PARADISE OH THINK TWICE ← Raquelle tilted her head to the side and furrowed her brow. She decided, however, not to ask him any further questions about it: he might have been withholding information to keep her from being frightened of him, even though it was quite evident that he wanted to just help her. Raquelle understood that. She figured that he might have a gun hidden on him or something. . . . But no that didn’t explain why the wolves would stay away from him. Oh, what did it matter so long as they did stay away?
The young and unaware were-raccoon smiled up at the man and nodded her head, tightening her arms around his. At least he didn’t seem to mind the contact. . . . If he had he would have pulled away from her already, but he hadn’t. Maybe he knew it was making her feel good. He asked her what the worse that could happen, and she looked up at her, her expression falling for a second. There was a lot. . . eaten by bears. . . cougars. . . the wolves might stay away from the man, but that didn’t mean anything else would. What if there were wild boars in the area? Or did they just live in Africa and stuff? Raquelle heard those things were mean. . . .
A drop of rain hit her cheek and Raquelle started slightly, looking around for the source. As another hit her shoulder, she looked at the wet spot on her shirt and then up at the sky, where a couple more fell against her face. Rain! She frowned and looked at Mal. “What are we going to do if it starts to pour? There’s no shelter out here. What if we get pneumonia or something? We’ll die out here!” she said, sounding fearful as she hugged her shirt closer to her body. All she had on was a dark band t-shirt. Raquelle didn’t even recognize the band’s name, but it had fit her.

Mal swore silently to himself as the rain began to fall. If it wasn't one thing it was another. At least the rain was light, for now, but if it began to rain harder, they would have to find some sort of shelter. It did have one effect, though. The wolves would lose their scent in the rain, and the howls would stop.If nothing else, it would serve to let the girl relax, if only a little bit. He knew, even as she asked, that the rain would not harm either of them. After all, people of their...persuasion very, very rarely got sick, so pneumonia was the least of their worries. He didn't say it out loud, however, because he didn't think she'd been immortal long enough to realize her newfound immunities.
Instead, he took off his long coat, spreading it around her shoulders. He didn't really need it, and the coat was water proof. It would keep most of her dry, as long as she wore it. "Here, take this...it should keep you dry. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine." He smiled at her, trying to reassure her again. The weather wouldn't kill him, and as long as he was around, he was determined to make sure that she got out of it too. Just to be on the safe side, he figured, it would be nice to be able to find at least some shelter... Maybe one of these hills had a cave in it...that would do, although he wasn't sure that Raquelle would like the option.
Lifting his head, he took a deep breath through his nose, sifting through the scents of the area. Trees...a few soaking wet animals.... He focused on the closest hills, trying to get more information through the masking cloud of rain, the drops falling steadily harder. Still...nothing...wait, there! A funnel of air formed from the shape of a shallow cave in the side of one of the bluffs on the hill. Now to see if Raquelle would agree... "Okay, I doubt we can get anywhere civilized before the rain hits, but there is a cave about ten minutes that way....That is, if you don't mind leaving the path...we only have a few minutes until this rain starts coming down really hard..."
